Sicily Weather, climate and geography
Weather & climate
Sicily has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, wetter winters. Summer temperatures from June to August often range between 30°C and 35°C (86°F to 95°F), while spring and autumn temperatures are typically between 18°C and 25°C (64°F to 77°F).
The best time to visit is generally from April to June and September to October, when the weather is pleasant and suitable for sightseeing. Winter months are cooler, with temperatures around 10°C to 15°C (50°F to 59°F), and some rainfall.
Lightweight clothing is suitable for Sicily's warm climate, particularly during the summer months. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended for exploring historic centres and archaeological sites.
In spring and autumn, a light jacket or layers may be useful, especially in the evenings. When visiting churches or other religious sites, modest clothing that covers the shoulders and knees is expected.
Geography
Sicily lies in the Mediterranean Sea just south of mainland Italy, separated by the narrow Strait of Messina. The island covers approximately 25,460 sq km (9,974 sq miles) and features a varied landscape of mountains, rolling hills and coastal plains.
Mount Etna, at 3,329m (10,922ft), is the island's highest point and one of Europe's most active volcanoes. Much of Sicily's interior is hilly and rural, while the coastline alternates between sandy beaches, rocky cliffs and small fishing villages.
