Where to stay in Uzbekistan
Uzbekistan offers a wide range of accommodation options to suit different budgets and travel styles. In major cities such as Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva, visitors will find international hotels, mid-range business hotels, and a growing number of boutique properties. Traditional guesthouses are especially popular in historic cities, often set in restored courtyard houses that provide a more personal experience and local hospitality. Standards vary, but most places offer private bathrooms, air conditioning, and Wi-Fi. Advance booking is recommended during peak travel seasons, particularly in spring and autumn, when popular destinations can fill up quickly.
Camping in Uzbekistan is possible but remains limited and largely informal. There are very few designated campsites with facilities, and most camping is done in remote areas such as desert regions, mountain foothills, or near lakes, often as part of organised tours. Independent wild camping is generally tolerated in rural areas, but visitors should seek local advice, respect private land, and be mindful of environmental and safety considerations. Facilities such as toilets, water, and waste disposal are usually unavailable, so campers must be fully self-sufficient. For most travellers, staying in guesthouses or yurt camps operated by local tour providers offers a more practical and culturally immersive alternative to camping.
