Where to stay in Thailand
Thailand offers a wide range of accommodation to suit every style and budget, from simple guesthouses and family-run inns to luxury resorts and boutique hotels. In major cities such as Bangkok and Chiang Mai, travellers will find everything from international hotel chains to modern serviced apartments and design-focused boutique stays. Prices tend to be competitive, and even mid-range options often provide good facilities and attentive service.
Beach destinations like Phuket, Krabi, Samui and Hua Hin offer an array of waterfront resorts, bungalows and villas, many with pools, spas and direct beach access. On smaller islands, accommodation may range from rustic bamboo huts to upscale eco-resorts. In rural areas and the north, homestays and lodge-style accommodations give visitors the chance to experience local hospitality and community life.
Booking in advance is advisable during peak travel periods, particularly around major holidays and festival seasons.
Camping in Thailand is quite popular in certain regions, especially in national parks and mountainous areas. Well-managed campsites with basic facilities can be found in places such as Khao Yai National Park, Doi Inthanon, Doi Suthep–Pui, Erawan, and parts of the northern highlands around Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. Many national parks offer tent rentals, sleeping mats and simple amenities like restrooms and designated cooking areas.
Wild camping is not generally encouraged and is restricted in many protected areas. In national parks, campers must stay within designated zones. Outside these areas, permission should be sought from local landowners or authorities. As regulations can vary between regions, it is best to check the rules before setting up camp.
Thailand's climate can be unpredictable, particularly during the rainy season, when sudden downpours and strong winds are common. Nights in northern highlands can be surprisingly cool during the dry season. Mosquitoes and insects are present year-round, so repellent and proper gear are essential. With the right preparation, camping offers a scenic and peaceful way to experience Thailand's natural landscapes.
