Airports of Thailand have announced plans to expand Chiang Rai Airport by 2030. The plans include an extra taxiway, extension of the current runway and more shops and facilities in the terminal building.
On the first floor of the international terminal, near exit door 8, there is an information desk where you can ask for assistance.
From the city of Chiang Rai take Route 1232 eastbound for 2km (1.2 miles) before turning left onto Route 5023 north. Turn right after 6km (4 miles) and you have arrived at the airport. The drive time is approximately 20 minutes.
Public Transport
Bus: Local Thai buses, also known as a songthaew, are the cheapest option to get you to and from the airport.
Taxi: Taxies are plentiful and can be found outside exit Gate 3. The price from the airport to the city is about 160 to 200 baht. Another option is a tuk-tuk, a three-wheeled motorised rickshaw in bright colours. A ride usually costs less than 100 baht.
Terminal facilities
Wi-Fi internet access is available with the first 120 minutes of use being free of charge. There are also free mobile charging points located throughout the terminal building. A post office is available on the first floor of the terminal building. Public telephones are also available in the terminal building.
There are several restaurants and cafés located at Chiang Rai International Airport, including a bakery and an ice cream parlour.
Left-luggage facilities are available in both terminals. A lost property service is also available in the lobby of the terminal building.
Airport facilities
There are a handful of business lounges available at the Chiang Rai International Airport, offering facilities such as desktop computers and coffee machines. For extensive meeting facilities, Le Méridien Hotel (tel: +66 2653 3508; www.lemeridienchiangrai.com) is 5km (3 miles) away.
A large short-term car park is available, with a capacity to fit 603 vehicles. The parking fees are charged hourly, starting at 10 baht for the first hour and increasing to 100 baht after four hours. The maximum amount of time you can leave you car in the car park is 24 hours.
Car hire companies represented at Chiang Rai International Airport include Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Europcar, Hertz, National, Nissan, Thrifty and Sixt.
