Healthcare in Moldova is basic by Western European standards. In Chişinău, there are public hospitals and a small number of private clinics that offer better standards of care, including English-speaking staff in some cases. Outside the capital, medical facilities can be limited, and access to specialist treatment may be difficult.

Pharmacies are widespread in cities and towns and are usually well stocked with common medications. Many medicines that require a prescription elsewhere may be available over the counter in Moldova, though visitors should bring any essential prescription medication with them, along with a copy of the prescription. It is advisable to have comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical treatment and evacuation, as serious cases may require transfer to another country.

Food and drink

Tap water in Chişinău is safe for consumption, but in other areas, visitors are advised to use bottled water for drinking, which is widely available and inexpensive. Ice in drinks should be avoided unless it is known to be made from purified water.

Food in restaurants is generally safe, particularly in established eateries and hotels. Visitors should take care when consuming unpasteurised dairy products, which may be sold in markets or rural areas. If in doubt, stick to pasteurised milk and cheese from supermarkets. As with travel anywhere, basic precautions such as eating freshly cooked food and washing fruit before consumption are sensible.

Other risks

Moldova is generally a safe destination with low levels of violent crime. However, petty crime such as pickpocketing can occur in busy areas.

Road safety can be a concern due to uneven road conditions, poorly lit rural roads and occasional unpredictable driving behaviour. Extra care is advised when travelling at night. In winter, icy conditions can make driving hazardous.

Travellers should also be aware of the political situation in the breakaway region of Transnistria, which operates outside the control of the Moldovan authorities. While visits are possible, the region has its own entry procedures and regulations, and assistance from foreign embassies may be limited there.

Visa and passport information is updated regularly and is correct at the time of publishing. You should verify critical travel information independently with the relevant embassy before you travel.
