Moldovans are generally polite, reserved at first and value respectful behaviour. Greetings are important, with a handshake common in formal or professional settings. Hospitality is a strong cultural trait, and visitors invited into a home are often offered food and drink; accepting at least a small amount is considered polite.
Tipping is customary but modest. In restaurants and cafes, leaving around 10% is appreciated if service is good, though it is not always expected in small or informal establishments. In bars, rounding up the bill or leaving small change is sufficient. Taxi drivers do not expect tips, but rounding up the fare is common.
Photography is generally acceptable in public places, but visitors should avoid photographing military installations, police, border areas or official buildings. When photographing people, especially in rural areas or at religious sites, it is polite to ask permission first. Modest dress and respectful behaviour are expected when visiting churches or monasteries, particularly during services.
