The Euro is the official currency for the French Overseas Departments French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique and Réunion. For further details, see France section.

Credit cards

American Express, Carte Bleue, Diners Club, MasterCard and Visa are accepted. ATMs can be found in Cayenne, Ile de Cayenne, Kourou and Saint Laurent du Maroni.

Travellers cheques

These are accepted in a few places in Cayenne and Kourou. To avoid additional exchange rate charges, travellers are advised to take traveller's cheques in Euros, US Dollars or Pounds Sterling.

Currency restriction

There are no restrictions on the import or export of local or foreign currency. However, amounts exceeding €10,000 or equivalent must be declared if travelling from or to a country outside the European Union.

Currency exchange

There is a bureau de change at Rochambeau airport and in Cayenne. They will exchange money every day except Saturday.

French Guiana duty free

If arriving from mainland France or another EU country, travellers may import goods to the value of €1,000 without incurring customs duty.

If arriving from outside the EU, travellers may import the following goods to French Guiana without incurring customs duty:

• 200 cigarettes or 100 cigarillos or 50 cigars or 250g of tobacco.
• 1L of spirits over 22% volume and 2L of alcoholic drinks less than 22% volume.
• 4L of wine.
• 16L of beer.
• Goods to the value of €430 if arriving by air or sea and €300 if arriving by other means (reduced to €150 for children under 15).
