Restaurants in Stavanger
For a medium-sized city, Stavanger does well for restaurants, from deluxe seafood places overlooking the harbour to run-of-the-mill pizza places jammed into narrow side streets. Most of the good places are within easy walking distance of the main harbour.
The Stavanger restaurants below have been grouped into three pricing categories:
Expensive (over NOK750)
Moderate (NOK300 to NOK750)
Cheap (up to NOK300)
These prices are for a three-course meal for one, including a half bottle of house wine (where available) or equivalent, tax and service. Tipping is not essential, but most customers round their bill up.
Sabi Omakase
Billed as one of Norway’s finest and most original sushi restaurants, the award-winning Sabi Omakase serves traditionally prepared Japanese sushi dishes. There is only one menu: the chef’s presentation of the day, priced at around NOK 1,300 per person, excluding drinks. Reservation is essential.
RE-NAA
Awarded a Michelin Star in 2016 (reputedly Norway’s first outside the capital), this small and intimate restaurant offers what chef Sven Erik Renaa describes as the best of the region’s produce presented as a fixed-price culinary ‘experience’. For those unwilling to lay out in excess of NOK 2,000 for their dinner and wine, the same chef offers cheaper alternatives in other rooms.
Restaurant N B Sørensen's Dampskipbsexpedition
This smart and stylish restaurant occupies delightful premises on the first floor of one of the city’s older wooden buildings, its décor dotted with nautical knick-knacks. The food is top notch - modern continental with roots in French cuisine plus a Norwegian flourish here and there. The award-winning wine selection is the best in town, the service attentive and knowledgeable.
Gaffel & Karaffel
A very decent restaurant in a vibrant house that also includes a champagne bar and a banqueting hall, Gaffel & Karaffel offers Continental and Norwegian food as well as a varied and mouth-watering tapas menu.
Bølgen & Moi Stavanger
With a great location out on the pier by the Norwegian Petroleum Museum, Bolgen & Moi Stavanger is a brasserie-style restaurant offering lunch, a la carte dinner and an exciting seven-course artistic menu. During summer this is a very popular place, with guests sitting outside enjoying the food and the views out to sea.
Ostehuset
Attractive modern café, where the speciality is pizza, though here you are allowed to customise it yourself from a delicious range of extra toppings. It offers sandwiches, cakes, bread and snacks too.
Dolly Dimple's Torget
Dolly Dimple's is a chain of pizza restaurants with outlets in most cities and bigger towns in Norway. The main Dolly restaurant in Stavanger is located right across the road from Torget (The Town Square) and offers good pizzas at reasonable prices.
Café Sting
Fashionable café-bar serving inexpensive Norwegian food in large portions – try the meatballs or the fish balls. The menu also includes the ubiquitous pizzas and burgers, and a range of lighter snacks during the day.
Godt Brød
Eating out in Norway is almost always expensive, but this straightforward modern chain café does break this trend with bargain-basement snacks, cakes and sandwiches.
