Where to stay in Spain

Hotels:

Spain offers a wide range of accommodation, from luxury hotels and international chains to boutique properties, family-run guesthouses and budget hostels. Madrid, Barcelona, Seville and other major cities have hotels to suit most budgets, while coastal resorts and the Balearic and Canary Islands offer extensive holiday accommodation, including beachfront hotels and all-inclusive resorts.

For a more distinctive experience, Spain's Paradores network offers accommodation in historic buildings, including castles, monasteries and former palaces, as well as properties in scenic natural settings. Smaller establishments such as pensiones and hostales provide affordable accommodation, although facilities vary. Rural guesthouses, known as casas rurales, are popular in mountain regions and traditional villages.

Accommodation prices vary considerably by destination and season, with higher rates during summer, major festivals and public holidays. Tourist accommodation may be subject to local or regional taxes, particularly in Catalonia and the Balearic Islands. Short-term holiday rentals are regulated, and requirements vary between autonomous communities and municipalities.

Camping:

Spain has numerous campsites, particularly along the Mediterranean coast, in the Pyrenees and near national parks. Facilities range from basic rural sites to large holiday parks with swimming pools, restaurants and rental bungalows. Many coastal campsites operate seasonally, while some inland and southern sites remain open throughout the year.

Wild camping is generally restricted or prohibited, with rules varying by region and protected area. Camping in national parks and other sensitive environments usually requires specific authorisation, where permitted at all. Travellers using campervans should distinguish between legally parking a vehicle and setting up camp, as local regulations may prohibit outdoor furniture, awnings and other camping equipment outside designated areas.
