Currency information

Kiribati uses the Australian Dollar (AUD) as its official currency.

Australian Dollar (AUD; symbol A$) = 100 cents. Notes are in denominations of A$100, 50, 20, 10 and 5. Coins are in denominations of A$2 and 1, and 50, 20, 10 and 5 cents. Australian banknotes circulate alongside locally issued Kiribati coins, which are accepted at parity.

Credit cards

VISA and MasterCard are the only major credit cards accepted in Kiribati, but acceptance is limited. Credit cards cannot be used on the outer islands. Cash is essential for most transactions.

ATM

ATMs are available on South Tarawa at the ANZ Bank branches in Betio, Bairiki and Bikenibeu, as well as at the gate of Tungaru Central Hospital in Nawerewere. On Kiritimati Island, an ATM is available at Ronton.

Mon to Fri, 09:00 to 15:00.

Currency restriction

Visitors are permitted to carry up to A$5,000 in cash when travelling to Kiribati.

Currency exchange options are limited, so travellers should arrive with Australian dollars in suitable denominations.

Kiribati duty free

The following items may be imported into Kiribati by travellers aged 21 and over without incurring customs duty:

• Tobacco products: up to 200 cigarettes or 250g of tobacco.
• Alcoholic beverages: up to 2.25L of portable spirits and 4L of wine (or beer).

Banned imports

Prohibited and restricted imports into Kiribati include narcotics and illegal drugs, firearms and ammunition, explosives and fireworks, and pornographic material. Strict biosecurity regulations apply to foodstuffs, plants, seeds and animal products – visitors must declare them upon arrival for inspection.

Allowances are subject to change and interpretation by customs officials. Travellers are advised to check with Kiribati Customs before travel.

Banned exports

The export of protected wildlife, coral, shells and other natural materials is restricted or prohibited without official permission. Cultural artefacts and items of historical significance may not be exported without authorisation. This list is not exhaustive.
