Charlotte-Douglas International Airport Guide (CLT)
An important hub for American Airways, Charlotte-Douglas International Airport is the biggest airport in North Carolina and is also one of the busiest airports in the US based on traffic movements. The Visitor Info Center (tel: +1 704 359 4027) is located on the baggage level and provides airport and tourist information. There is also an information desk (tel: +1 704 359 4013) on the ticketing level. Further information desks are located at each baggage reclaim area and volunteer customer service assistants can also be found throughout the airport.
From central Charlotte, take Interstate 277 to Interstate 77 south, turn off at exit 6B to Billy Graham Parkway and follow signs for the airport. Alternatively, from Interstate 85, take exit 33 to Billy Graham Parkway and then turn onto Josh Birmingham Parkway, following signs to Charlotte-Douglas International Airport.
Public Transport
Bus:The Charlotte Area Transit System (tel: +1 704 336 7433; www.charlottenc.gov/cats) operates a bus service (Sprinter) from Charlotte-Douglas International Airport to the city centre (journey time: 25 minutes; fare: US$2.20). Buses are available from outside Zone D.
Shuttle:Numerous pre-bookable shuttle services link the airport to the central city area, major hotels and the business districts. These depart from the east end of the upper level of the terminal building. Most hotels also provide courtesy shuttles.
Taxi:Taxis are readily available from outside the terminal on the baggage reclaim level and operate fixed-rate fares to various zones in the local area. The journey time to the city centre is around 15-20 minutes, and fares start at US$25.
Terminal facilities
Free Wi-Fi internet access is available throughout Charlotte-Douglas International Airport.
There are numerous cafés, bars and restaurants, along with several fast-food outlets, throughout the concourses at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport.
An extensive choice of shopping is available at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport, ranging from newsstands to gift shops and fashion outlets. Duty-free shopping is available for international passengers.
Trolleys are available for a small fee. A lost and found service (tel: +1 704 359 8765) is also available.
Airport facilities
Basic business facilities are available at the airport, including meeting rooms. More extensive meeting and event facilities can be found in nearby hotels, including the Holiday Inn Charlotte Airport Conference Center (tel: +1 704 394 4301; www.ihg.com).
All toilets and telephones are wheelchair-accessible and TTY text telephones are located throughout the terminal (tel: +1 704 359 4837). Wheelchairs are available on request from airlines: passengers requiring special assistance should inform their airline prior to travel. Assistance carts for accessing areas of the terminal are available on request from Skycap porters.
Disabled car parking spaces with direct access to the terminal are provided in the hourly car park. The daily-rate car park also has disabled parking spaces and is served by a wheelchair-accessible shuttle.
Hourly, daily and long-term parking is available in several car parks at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport. All car parks, except the hourly one opposite the terminal (where the first hour of parking is free of charge), are linked by a complimentary shuttle service. Car hire companies represented at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport include: Advantage, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National and Sixt, all of which have desks in the Hourly Parking Deck in front of the Terminal. Hire car drop-off/pick-up is located a short distance from the terminal.
The recently refurbished, 222-room Sheraton Charlotte Airport Hotel has a large gym, indoor and outdoor pools, a restaurant and lounge bar, as well as 17 meeting rooms. A scheduled free shuttle service operates between the hotel and the airport.
A short drive from the airport, this recently refurbished Holiday Inn has several conference rooms, an outdoor swimming pool, fitness centre, bar/grill and free Wi-Fi access. A complimentary airport shuttle service links to the terminal.
The Courtyard Charlotte Airport is the closest hotel to the airport, which lies 1.6km (1 mile) away – a complimentary shuttle service is available to the terminal. The hotel boasts an indoor pool, a small gym and on-site dining. Free Wi-Fi is also available.
For those on a budget, this is less expensive option near Charlotte Airport. It has limited business and meetings facilities, and there is a choice of restaurants in the near vicinity.
