Flying to Sudan
Sudan Airways (www.sudanair.com) is Sudan's main carrier. There are no direct flights from the UK or the USA. Indirect options include flights with Egyptair (www.egyptair.com) via Cairo and Turkish Airlines (www.turkishairlines.com) via Istanbul.
Flight times:
To Khartoum: from London - 9 hours (including stopover); New York - 17 hours (including stopover).
Departure tax:
US$20 (Sudanese nationals may pay in local currency). Transit passengers (within 24 hours) are exempt.
Travel by rail
Driving to Sudan
The only practical land border is with Ethiopia at Gallabat. The land border with Egypt is periodically closed to foreigners.
Getting to Sudan by boat
Piracy has been reported in the area. A weekly ferry runs from Wadi Halfa down Lake Aswan to Aswan (Egypt). Irregularly departing barges head up the Nile from Kosti to Malakal in South Sudan.
