Healthcare in Slovakia is generally of a good standard, particularly in Bratislava and other major cities, although facilities may be more limited in rural areas. Pharmacies (lekáreň) are widely available, with some operating extended hours or providing an out-of-hours service.
Visitors from EU countries should carry a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), which provides access to medically necessary state healthcare under the same conditions as Slovak residents. UK visitors can use a valid UK-issued EHIC or Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC). Comprehensive travel insurance is nevertheless recommended, as these cards do not cover all treatment, private healthcare or medical repatriation.

Tap water is safe to drink throughout Slovakia. Food hygiene standards are generally good, and no particular precautions are required beyond normal food safety measures.
Tick-borne encephalitis and Lyme disease occur in Slovakia, particularly in forested and rural areas from spring to autumn. Travellers spending time outdoors should use insect repellent, wear long trousers and sleeves where practical and check the skin for ticks afterwards. Vaccination against tick-borne encephalitis may be considered for travellers planning extensive outdoor activities in risk areas.
Hikers and skiers should be prepared for rapidly changing weather in mountain areas. Travellers undertaking mountain activities should have appropriate insurance, as mountain rescue and evacuation may not be covered by standard healthcare arrangements.
