Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in Pristina and other larger towns, particularly in hotels, restaurants, supermarkets and shopping centres. Visa and Mastercard are the most commonly accepted cards, while American Express is less widely used.
Contactless payment is common in urban areas, and mobile payment services such as Apple Pay and Google Pay are increasingly accepted, especially in newer businesses and shopping centres.
Cash remains important in smaller towns, markets and some family-run businesses, so visitors should carry some euros for smaller purchases.
ATMs are widely available in Pristina and other major towns and cities. International debit and credit cards are generally accepted at bank-operated ATMs, though withdrawal fees may apply depending on the local bank and the traveller's home bank.
Amounts exceeding €10,000 (or equivalent) must be declared to customs authorities.
The currency used in Kosovo is the euro (EUR), despite Kosovo not being a member of the European Union or the eurozone. Foreign currency can be exchanged at banks and exchange offices in major towns and cities, though exchange facilities may be more limited outside urban areas.
ATMs are widely used by visitors and are often the most convenient way to obtain euros.
