Halifax Stanfield International Airport Guide (YHZ)
The main airport in Canada’s Nova Scotia province, Halifax Stanfield International Airport operates both domestic and international flights. Our guide to the airport includes useful information regarding terminal facilities, public transport access and nearby accommodation options.
There is an airport information desk (tel: +1 902 873 4422) in Arrivals. Additionally, the Tourism Nova Scotia Visitor Information Centre (tel: +1 902 873 1223; www.novascotia.com) is located on the main level of the airport, in Domestic Arrivals. It is open 0900-2100 daily. Volunteer assistants are available throughout the airport to help passengers with a range of queries.
Halifax Stanfield International Airport can be reached from Highway 102, when heading north out of Halifax. Take exit 6 off the highway and follow the signs to the airport. The journey time from central Halifax is approximately 30 minutes.
Public Transport
Bus: MetroX (www.halifax.ca/metrotransit) bus 320 links the airport to central Halifax. The journey takes around 55 minutes.
Shuttle: Airport Express (tel: +1 800 575 1807; www.maritimebus.com) runs express shuttle services to various destinations in Nova Scotia, including a seasonal (November-April) express service to Halifax (journey time: 50 minutes). Taxi: Taxi and limousine services are available from in front of Domestic Arrivals. The journey time into Halifax can be anything from 30 to 90 minutes depending on traffic.
Terminal facilities
Bureau de change and travel insurance facilities are available at the International Currency Exchange booth on the main level of the terminal. There are also ATMs on this level as well as within the departures area.
Free Wi-Fi internet access is available throughout Halifax Stanfield International Airport. Telephones with internet access are situated throughout the departure lounges, while dedicated internet kiosks are positioned throughout the terminal. Postal services can be found at the International Currency Exchange booth.
There is a wide selection of fast-food outlets, cafés and snack bars both pre- and post-security within the terminal, including licensed bars and pubs.
The shops at Halifax Stanfield International Airport are mostly located on the main level and in the departures area, although there is a convenience store in Arrivals. The options include a gift shop, local crafts retailer, seafood shop and a travel store. Duty-free shopping is also available in the departures area.
A left-luggage service is located in the hallway in the ‘Centre Tunnel’ entrance to the airport. The 24-hour Lost Property Office (within the Security Office) can also be found in this concourse.
Airport facilities
Fax and other services are available at Travelex Canada, on the main level of the terminal. There are no meeting or conference facilities at the airport, however, a range of meeting rooms are available to hire in the adjacent ALT Hotel (tel: +1 855 258 5775; www.althotels.com).
Halifax Stanfield International Airport is wheelchair accessible and has barrier-free access. Other facilities include TDY telephones, reserved parking and lifts between floors. Passengers requiring wheelchairs and special assistance should inform their airline prior to travelling. A pre-booked wheelchair accessible bus service is also available (tel: +1 902 222 5438; www.needalift.ca).
Short- and medium-term parking is available a short distance from the terminal in covered and open-air car parks respectively. Long-term parking is available in ‘park ‘n’ fly’ open-air car parks, which are linked to the terminal by a free shuttle service. Car hire companies: Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National and Thrifty are all represented at Halifax Stanfield International Airport. Their desks, as well as the pick-up and drop-off area, are located in the covered car park opposite the terminal.
Boasting both indoor and outdoor pools as well as a gym, the 156-room Quality Inn Halifax Airport is just three minutes by free 24-hour shuttle from the airport terminal. The property is also a good option for business guests, with free Wi-Fi internet access, a business centre and conference facilities, along with free hot and cold breakfast.
Located approximately 4km (2.5 miles) from Halifax Airport, this mid-range hotel offers a free 24-hour shuttle service that can be booked via a courtesy telephone in Arrivals. Among its facilities are a fitness room, pool and an on-site grill-style restaurant.
The Holiday Inn Express Halifax Airport offers a good value alternative to other hotels in the neighbourhood. It has an indoor pool, fitness centre and a fully equipped business centre.
This new, boutique-style hotel is located next to the airport car park and is connected to the terminal via a walkway. It offers a range of room types, along with meeting facilities. Altcetera Café offers food 24 hours a day, including soups, salads, sandwiches and a choice of hot meals.
