Varadero Juan Gualberto Gómez Airport Guide (VRA)
Varadero Juan Gualberto Gómez Airport is located 35km (21 miles) southwest of Varadero and around 40km (24 miles) east of Matanzas in northern Cuba.
Also known as Varadero Airport, due to its proximity to Varadero in northern Cuba, Juan Gualberto Gómez Airport is the country’s second largest airport and is a gateway to the popular beach resorts of Cuba. Varadero Juan Gualberto Gómez Airport is a relatively small airport with limited information services. However, its staff – many of whom speak at least some English – can provide assistance if required.
From Varadero, take Autopista Sur westwards and merge onto Puente Bascular, which runs along the coast. At Carbonera, turn left along the airport access road: Juan Gualberto Gómez Airport is about 5km (3 miles) south of the motorway. The total drive time from Varadero is approximately 40 minutes.
From Matanzas, take the Puente Bascular eastwards to Carbonera then turn right onto the southbound airport access road. The drive time from Matanzas is approximately 20 minutes.
Public Transport
Bus: A regular bus service operates between Varadero Juan Gualberto Gómez Airport and Varadero town. The journey time is around 40 minutes and a one-day fare costs CUC$5. Most resorts and larger hotels provide shuttle services.
Taxi: Taxis operate from outside the terminal. The journey time to Varadero is around 25 minutes, and fares range from CUC$20 to CUC$30.
Terminal facilities
There are snack bars open during the daytime within the airport, but these close in the evening.
There is a small duty-free shop selling Cuban cigars and a limited range of gifts and souvenirs.
A left-luggage service is not available. For lost property enquiries, ask staff positioned in the baggage reclaim area.
Airport facilities
There are no conference facilities at Varadero Juan Gualberto Gómez Airport. However such facilities are available at several nearby hotels including the luxurious Blau Marina Varadero Resort (tel: +53 4566 9966; www.blau-hotels-cuba.com) in Varadero.
Car hire operators CubaCar and Rex are represented at the airport. The car hire desks are located in Arrivals.
The 5-star Iberostar Varadero is located alongside Varadero’s beach and offers a range of activities and facilities for all ages. A children’s club is available for eight to 12-year-olds, while there are also water sports and swimming pools to enjoy. The hotel is 15km (9 miles) from the town and 50km (31 miles) from the airport.
Surrounded by lush gardens and boasting sea views, Blau Varadero Hotel is located along the Hicacos Peninsula in Varadero, 40km (25 miles) from the airport. Among the hotel’s numerous facilities is a diving school, massage service and a gift shop. On-site dining is available from the hotel’s two restaurants, with both buffet and à la carte options available.
One of the closest hotels to the airport, being just 20km (12 miles) away, the 3-star Hotel Oasis boasts a beachfront location and numerous facilities, including a large swimming pool, a games room and on-site restaurant. Private car rental is also available through the hotel.
