Currency & Money
Chilean Peso (CLP; symbol CH$) = 100 centavos. The local symbol is simply $. Notes are in denominations of CH$20,000, 10,000, 5,000, 2,000 and 1,000. Coins are in denominations of CH$500, 100, 50, 10, 5 and 1, although 5 and 1 are now very rare.
Credit cards are commonly accepted in towns and cities, but bring cash if you are heading to smaller shops or rural areas.
The import and export of local and foreign currencies is unlimited, however amounts exceeding the equivalent of US$10,000 must be declared.
Chile duty free
The following goods may be imported into Chile without incurring customs duty by travellers above the age of 14 years:
• 400 cigarettes (by travellers aged 18 and over only).
• 2.5L of alcoholic drinks (by travellers aged 18 and over only).
• Gifts to the value of US$300.
• 2 mobile phones.
• 1 photo camera.
• purchases made in duty free shops up to the value of US$675.
• medication for personal use with a doctor's prescription.
It is obligatory to pay customs for personal belongings up to the value of US$3000 and items with commercial character up to the value of US$1000. When exceeding these limits, importers are obliged to make use of the services of customs agencies.
