Chileans are generally polite and reserved in initial interactions. A handshake is customary when meeting someone for the first time, while friends may greet each other with a light kiss on the cheek. Punctuality is expected in business settings, though social occasions may begin more flexibly.

Dress standards are relatively informal in everyday life, particularly in cities, but smart-casual attire is common in restaurants and social gatherings. Modest dress is appropriate when visiting churches.

Tipping is customary in Chile. Restaurants commonly add a voluntary service charge of around 10% to the bill; it is customary to accept it if the service has been satisfactory. In cafés and bars, rounding up the bill is common practice. Taxi drivers do not generally expect a tip, though rounding up the fare is appreciated.

Photography is generally permitted in public places, but visitors should ask permission before photographing individuals, especially in rural or indigenous communities. In some museums or churches, flash photography may be restricted.
