A good selection of beers and wines keep this place popular. From May to October, there are also live jazz sessions on the steps of St Ursola Street keeping the atmosphere magical.
Valletta Nightlife
Not so many years ago, the centre of Valletta fell very quiet when office workers and shopkeepers left for the evening. It is a different story today. New pubs and fashionable bars stay open to welcome visitors. The area around Strait Street (which was once a red-light district full of sailors' bars) is the liveliest.
Just below the city walls, the Valletta Waterfront is also home to a number of restaurants and bars. There are large outdoor seating areas face onto the harbour.
If you want excellent clubbing, head to Paceville in St Julian's (about 8km north of Valletta). This party destination is the mecca of Malta's clubland so expect a high concentration of nightclubs, stripclubs, bars and restaurants.
Bars in Valletta
A cosy British pub popularized as actor Oliver Reed’s last watering hole (his unpaid bill is framed on the wall). No-frills and intimate, this is a great place to start or end a night.
If you love wine, especially love pairing wine with cheese, then check out this wine bar nestled in a 400 year-old stone vaulted cellar.
Clubs in Valletta
About 8km north of Valletta, Paceville in St Julian is Malta's clubland. Havana is a popular club attracting young RnB and Hip Hop crowds. On weekends, there is a separate section playing Flashback (the best of 70s, 80s and 90s) for older clientele.
On the Valletta Waterfront, Q Bar is the best after-hours venue serving up Asian-fusion food, top DJs and live bands. This sophisticated watering hole offers great views, exclusive VIP seats, a club and attracts a well-dressed crowd.
If you want a fantastic night out, the massive Sky Club is ready to deliver. Apart from featuring local and internatinal DJs playing house and techno, the club also hosts live concerts.
Live Music in Valletta
Just a few doors away from the Trabuxu bar is Maestro e Fresco, a bohemian-style wine bar which hosts live music most nights.
Sasha's Bar & Bistro is run by one of Malta's top musicians and offers a variety of live music most nights, from classical and jazz to pop and folk.
Classical Music in Valletta
Valletta's other cultural space, the St James Cavalier Centre for Creativity, is by contrast relentlessly modern, albeit housed in the superbly renovated carcass of a 16th-century fortification built into the city walls. It promotes contemporary performing and visual arts with an emphasis on Maltese artists, though world cinema and classical theatre and music performances are regular events.
Theatre in Valletta
Valletta's cultural highlight is the Manoel Theatre, which has been staging performances, on and off, since 1732. Retaining its glittering original glory, this little baroque gem is one of Europe's oldest theatres and is well worth a visit by night or day (open for guided tours, museum, caféé and restaurant). It has a wide-ranging repertoire encompassing all the classical performing arts and also stages occasional poetry, jazz, even rock and folk music concerts. Seat prices can be very cheap and each Wednesday a free lunchtime concert is given in one of its side rooms.
