Memphis International Airport Guide (MEM)
The busiest airport in Tennessee, Memphis International Airport is a key hub for music-loving Memphis. Our guide to the airport includes important contact details and information on public transport, local accommodation and airport facilities.
There are visitor information booths in the baggage reclaim area on the ground floor of the main terminal area. Multilingual interpreters are on hand to answer questions in the customs clearance and boarding areas.
From Memphis city centre, take Interstate 240 until the ‘Airways’ exit. At the fork, take a left onto Plough Boulevard which leads to the terminal.
Public Transport
Bus: The Memphis Area Transit Authority (tel: (901) 274 6282; www.matatransit.com) offers public bus services from the lower, outer kerb near concourse C; bus 2 runs into Memphis.
Shuttle: There are various pre-bookable shuttle bus services to out-of-town destinations. The journey time is 45 to 60 minutes and fares start at around US$2.
Taxi: Taxis are available in front of the main terminal area. Information on rates and journey times is available from the manned booth. Fares to central Memphis start at around US$30.
Terminal facilities
There is a bank in the covered walkway between concourses A and B. ATMs can be found in the main ticketing area and in concourse B. Currency exchange services are available from the ticketing area of concourse B.
Wi-Fi is available in the terminal complex. There is a post box near baggage claim in concourse A.
There are numerous restaurants, bars, fast food outlets, cafés and snack bars throughout the terminal complex. Among the options are a sports bar in concourse C and a Blues-style restaurant in the area between concourses A and B.
Shops at Memphis International Airport include the Elvis gift shop, which sells licensed music merchandise in concourse B. Various gift shops, news stands and duty-free outlets are also present in the terminal complex.
Lost property is handled by the Memphis Airport Authority Police (tel: (901) 922 8050), who are available to assist with enquiries 24 hours a day. There is not currently a left-luggage facility at Memphis International Airport.
A medical centre is located in the main area of the terminal complex, while AED (defibrillator) units are situated at various points throughout the airport. For those with young ones, baby change facilities are available in all toilets, there is a nursery in the terminal complex and children's play areas are located on all concourses. Shoeshine booths are situated in concourses B and C.
Airport facilities
Meeting rooms (tel: (901) 922 8000) are available at the Work Centre between concourses A and B. The Travelex International Travel Insurance and Business Centre (tel: (901) 922 8090) in ticket lobby B provides fax and photocopying facilities, as well as notary and financial services.
Additionally, the on-site Regency Inn and Suites (tel: (901) 332 2370) offers extensive conference, meeting and banqueting facilities.
Memphis International Airport is well equipped to meet the needs of disabled passengers. Among the facilities are adapted toilets, lifts, ramps and TDD telephones. All car parks have free reserved spaces for drivers displaying disability identification. Passengers requiring wheelchairs and special assistance should inform their airline prior to travel.
Short and long-term parking (tel: (901) 922 8065) is available in the multistorey car park next to the terminal complex; the first 30 minutes of parking is free.
There are also three long-term surface car parks (A, B and C) behind the multistorey car park; these are connected to the terminal by a complimentary shuttle bus. In addition, a 'cell phone lot' is available for those meeting arriving passengers.
Car hire companies represented at Memphis International Airport include: Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National and Thrifty.
There is a courtesy telephone located in baggage reclaim where passengers can phone request pick-up by complimentary shuttle buses, which leave from outside baggage reclaim.
Hotels
There is one budget hotel on site and several additional low-cost options within a short distance of the airport, most of which provide courtesy shuttle services to and from the terminals. Naturally, due to Memphis' international musical stature, there is a huge choice of accommodation in the central area.
An ideal choice for ‘Elvis pilgrims’, the Days Inn is immediately opposite the entrance to Graceland – it even has a guitar-shaped swimming pool. Shuttles operate between this low-cost hotel and the airport, and breakfast is included in the room rate.
Linked via a free shuttle service to Memphis International Airport (which is and 3km/2 miles away), the budget Clarion Hotel Airport/Graceland offers on-site parking, free internet and houses a seasonal outdoor pool with a poolside bar.
Boasting an outdoor pool, shuttle service and meeting facilities, the Knights Inn Memphis is just 3km (2 miles) from Memphis International Airport. There is no on-site restaurant but the hotel is close to a range of dining options.
Regency Inn and Suites Memphis Airport
This property is located on the airport site and it runs a shuttle to the terminal complex. On-site dining, parking, fitness facilities and meeting space are among the hotel’s facilities.
