One of three major airports in the San Francisco Bay Area, Oakland International Airport is located south of Oakland and just across the water from San Francisco. Airport news

In May 2015, Oakland Airport commenced work on a US$100 million renovation of the Terminal 1 complex. The project includes seismic architectural retrofits in central buildings and upgrade work to existing infrastructure. The project is likely to run until Spring 2017.

Information desks are located in the public areas of Terminal 1 and Terminal 2.

Transfer between terminals

The two terminals are linked by a covered pedestrian walkway.

Driving directions

Oakland International Airport is accessible from the north and south of the country by Interstate 5 and from the east via Interstate 80.

From central Oakland follow Interstate 880 southbound and take the 98th Avenue exit (exit 35), which leads to Oakland International Airport’s entrance. The total drive time from Oakland to the airport is approximately 18 minutes.

Public Transport

Public transport rail

Rail: The Bay Area Rapid Transport (BART) driverless train system (tel: +1 510 465 2278; www.bart.gov) ferries passengers from the airport to Oakland Coliseum Station, from which transfers can be made to numerous nearby destinations including Downtown San Francisco (fare: US$10.05) and Downtown Oakland (fare: US$7.85).

Public transport road

Bus:AC Transit (tel: +1 510 891 4706; www.actransit.org) operates a number of local bus services. Bus 73 connects the airport with the Oakland Coliseum Station every 15 minutes (fare: US$2.10), while Bus 805 is the late-night service that connects the airport with Oakland Coliseum Station and downtown Oakland every hour between 0035 and 0430 (fare: US$2.10).

Shuttle:Regional shuttle services are available to most Bay Area destinations, including Vallejo, Napa and North Bay. Operators include Evans Airport Service (tel: +1 707 255 1559; www.evanstransportation.com) and Airport Express (tel: +1 707 837 8700; www.airportexpressinc.com).

Taxi:Taxis are readily available from Friendly Cab (tel: +1 510 536 3000; www.friendlycab.com).

ATMs can be found throughout Oakland International Airport.

Communication

Free Wi-Fi internet access (for up to 45 minutes) is available throughout Oakland International Airport. Public telephones are scattered throughout the terminal complex and post boxes are also available in both terminals.

Food

There is a good choice of cafés, snack bars, bars and restaurants at Oakland International Airport after the security screening areas of both terminals. Additional catering facilities can be found before security in both terminals.

Shopping

There are a number of shops at Oakland International Airport, the majority of which can be found in Terminal 2 – although the sufficient options in Terminal 1 do include a duty-free shop. Specialist shops include a sports clothing retailer, a wine merchant and a sunglasses outlet.

Luggage

Left-luggage and lost property services (tel: +1 510 563 3982) are located in the Airport Administrative offices at the corner of Alan Shepard Way and John Glenn Drive prior to Terminal 1. Luggage trolleys are available throughout Oakland International Airport.

Other

A paramedic service is on hand to deal with medical emergencies. Shoeshine booths are located within the terminals.

Conference and business

Laptop Lane business centres are located in Terminal 1 next to gate 10 and in Terminal 2 next to gate 20. Laptop Lanes provide private, mini offices with computers, printers, phone connections and fax machines.

The nearby Hilton Oakland Airport hotel (tel: +1 510 635 5000; www3.hilton.com) offers a full-service business centre and meeting facilities ranging from small boardrooms to a theatre-style venue that can accommodate up to 600 people. A courtesy shuttle bus operates between the hotel and Oakland International Airport.

Disabled facilities

Lifts and ramps are available where necessary; passengers requiring wheelchairs should contact their airline in advance of travel. Reserved parking is available in the hourly and daily car parks. There are three animal relief areas within the terminals.

AC Transit buses, as well as BART rail stations, are fully wheelchair-accessible and a number of shuttle services are specially designed to cater to those with physical disabilities. Any passengers who may require additional assistance are advised to contact their airline before travelling.

Car parking

There are more than 7,000 parking spaces at Oakland International Airport. Short and long-term parking is located directly opposite the terminals – a moving walkway and free shuttle buses link the two terminals and these car parks. Car rental

Car hire companies operating at Oakland Airport include: Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Firefly, Fox, Hertz, National and Thrifty. Shuttle buses provide transport from the terminals to the rental centre, which is about 10 minutes away.
