Things to do in Toledo

Fly over the Tagus River

There are lots of gems among the winding cobblestone alleys of Toledo Old Town: the Gothic cathedral, the mighty Alcázar fortress and most unexpectedly, Europe’s longest urban zipline. Strap in with Fly Toledo (+34 693 464 845; http://flytoledo.com) and soar from the Old Town over the Tagus River and past the Puente de San Martin bridge.

Enjoy a Moorish massage

Wander the streets of Toledo and you will see the city bears calligraphy, arches and decorative tiles – the beauty marks of a Moorish past. For an insight into Moorish culture, unwind in Medina Mudejar (+34 925 229 314; www.medinamudejar.com) whose steam rooms, warm baths and massages all take place in charming and suitably decorative surrounds.

Follow the river and amble to Aranjuez

Outdoor types with a hankering to hike should leave their compasses at home and use the river as a guide. The Tagus Nature Trail follows the waterway for 1,000km (621 miles). Head east for a moderate two-day ramble, which connects Toledo with Aranjuez, another delightful UNESCO site.

Ride the railway under your own steam

With many of Spain’s rural railway lines disused, the abandoned routes have been transformed into Greenways for cyclists and walkers to enjoy. Choose pedal power and explore under your own steam. The Jara Greenway is a beautiful stretch that cuts through the Montes de Toledo range towards La Villuerca.

Try some wine with a difference at a vineyard in Valdepeñas

Set your sights on La Mancha, one of the world’s largest vine-growing regions, to sip some of Spain’s spectacular wines. Vintage Spain (+34 947 310 126; www.vintagespain.com) offer groups tours of the vineyards, where guests can try a selection of red and white wine, including those made in earthenware jars - known as tinajas - at Valdepeñas.
