Passports

A passport valid for at least six months beyond the date of entry to Tanzania is required.

While part of Tanzania, Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous region with its own immigration procedures. You may be asked to show your passport on entry and exit.

Visas

Visas for Tanzania are required by all nationals referred to in the chart above, except:
1. Nationals of Cyprus, Gibraltar, Guernsey, Isle of Man, Jersey, Malta, and Romania do not require a visa.

Citizens from the following countries can enter Tanzania without a visa:

Africa: Botswana, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Eswatini (Swaziland), Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, Seychelles, South Africa, South Sudan, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Asia: Brunei, Hong Kong (China), Macao (China), Malaysia, Singapore.

Europe: Cyprus, Gibraltar, Guernsey, Isle of Man, Jersey, Malta, Romania.

Oceania: Ashmore & Cartier Islands, Cocos Islands, Cook Islands, Christmas Islands, Falkland Islands, Heard Island, Kiribati, Nauru, Niue Island, Norfolk Island, Papua New Guinea, Ross Dependency, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu.

Caribbean: Antigua & Barbuda, Anguilla, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Dominica (Commonwealth of Dominica), Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Montserrat, St. Kitts & Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Trinidad & Tobago, Turks & Caicos.

For Americans
Americans must obtain a multiple-entry visa even if the purpose is a short holiday. Apply for one by visiting visa.immigration.go.tz.

For Australian, British, Canadian and European travellers (who require a visa)
Visit visa.immigration.go.tz to apply in advance, as visas on arrival may no longer be available at the time of your travel.

Please note:
Visa holders are required to enter Tanzania through one of the five specified entry points, which are:
• Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA) in Dar es Salaam
• Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA) near Moshi and Arusha
• Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (AAKIA) on Unguja Island, Zanzibar
• Namanga border crossing (between Kenya and Tanzania)
• Tunduma border crossing (between Tanzania and Zambia)

Types and cost

Single-entry tourist e-visa: US$50, Multiple-entry e-visa: US$100, Business e-visa: US$250, Transit e-visa: US$30   

Validity

Single-entry (business and tourist) visa is valid for three months from the date of issue. Multiple-entry visa is valid for either six or 12 months from the date of issue.

Transit

Transit visas are available for those travelling through Tanzania to other destinations within a 14-day period. An onward flight ticket and/or proof of a visa of the destination may be required.

Application to
Application requirements

A local inbound travel insurance from Zanzibar Insurance Corporation is mandatory for foreign visitors to Zanzibar. Travel insurance costs approximately US$44 and is valid for 92 days. Without this travel insurance, entry may be refused. 

Temporary residence

Residence permits are granted to foreign nationals if they are employed by a Tanzanian company, or working long-term as missionaries or volunteers. You must apply for these through the Immigration Services Department (immigration.go.tz).

Working days

About ten working days.

Sufficient funds

Visitors must show that they can support themselves.

Extension of stay

You can extend your visas for three months at a time up to a maximum of six months at the immigration office in Dar es Salaam.
Business visas are not extendable without special permission from the Commissioner-General of Immigration.
