St Petersburg Hotels
Under the Tsars, St Petersburg was one of the world’s capitals of luxury and refinement, but standards of accommodation plummeted during the Soviet era. It is only in recent years that international prestige chains and independent boutique hotels have started replacing the faded state-run hostelries. Nevertheless, St Petersburg has some palatial properties that would almost satisfy the extravagant tastes of the Tsars.
For more travellers with shallower pockets, the city now has hotels, guesthouses and hostels catering to all budgets. However, as elsewhere in Russia, rates are high compared to neighbouring countries. Most of the mid-range and top-end hotels are located on or around Nevsky Prospekt, while cheaper guest houses and hostels are found in the residential neighbourhoods surrounding the historic heart. If you are staying in St Petersburg for more than three days, your hotel will register your Russian visa when you check in.
The St Petersburg hotels below have been grouped into three pricing categories:
Luxury (over US$300)
Moderate (US$150 to US$300)
Cheap (up to US$150)
These St Petersburg hotel prices are per double room per night, and include all taxes. Breakfast is extra.
For sheer grandeur and elegance, it's hard to beat the Belmond. Sprawling over three Italianate buildings between Nevsky prospekt and Iskusstv ploshchad, the hotel has 300 rooms with elegant marble bathrooms, plush featherbeds, delightful period details and sweeping city views. Luxury facilities include boutiques, an opulent spa and three fine dining restaurants.
You can’t actually stay at the Hermitage, but this grand baroque hotel, run by the owners of the State Museum, is the next best thing. Set in a gorgeously modernised mansion, it recreates the grandeur of Catherine’s riverside palace, down to the arcades of Ionic columns and lavish ballroom. Rooms have sumptuous fabrics, stylish furnishings and high-speed internet.
It would be hard to find grander facilities than at the Kempinski Hotel Moika 22. Minutes from the Hermitage, it combines 21st-century facilities with touches of imperial grandeur. Rooms have high-speed Wi-Fi, 24-hour room service, and goose-down pillows and duvets. The hotel also boasts two restaurants, a bar and lounge, an English-style tearoom and a famously well-stocked wine cellar.
