Killington ski resort
As the biggest and arguably best known ski area in New England, Killington has been pulling in thousands of skiers from the metropolises of the US East Coast for generations.
Uniquely for a ski resort there’s no substantial resort base at Killington, instead hotels and restaurants are spaced out for several miles along the sides of the access road, which climbs up to the base of the lifts. Together these add up to a very substantial selection of accommodation, dining and shopping options.
The ski slopes too are well spread out, extending for 16km (10 miles) across half a dozen mountain peaks. It’s a huge area that, with neighbouring resort Pico (included in the lift pass), also has one of the biggest lift-served verticals in the US.
Killington also has a reputation for its long ski season, which can sometimes stretch for six months. This is in part achieved thanks to the high natural average snowfall of the area, but also due to the resort’s formidable arsenal of snowmaking guns, an area it pioneered and is now one of the world’s leaders in.
Killington ski resort is located at the heart of Vermont's Green Mountains, New England, in the northeastern corner of the USA. It is separated from the city of Rutland by skiable terrain.
On the slopes
The snowmaking on its slopes and the abundance of snowfall allows Killington ski resort a relatively long season that generally lasts from early November through to mid-April.
Killington has a reputation for high-quality slope-grooming on a variety of trails, from wide open cruisers such as Needle's Eye and Skyeburst, to steep carving terrain on Double Dipper and Cascade. Snow-making blankets the resort's best known trails such as Outer Limits, the longest, steepest mogul run in eastern USA, which is on Bear Mountain.
Killington's two fast gondolas deliver skiers and riders of all ability levels to not only wide, groomed cruisers, but classic narrow New England trails, moguls, steeps, and 16 tree skiing areas.
Beginners have large nursery slopes leading down to the Snowshed Lodge, and a choice of green runs from each peak, including the popular Easy Street run from Ramshead Peak, the easy Great Eastern from the top of Skye Peak, and the winding Great Northern from Killington Peak. Children can learn in safety at the Ramshead Lodge with its Kid’s Ski and Snowboard School.
For freeskiers and riders, Killington offers multiple terrain features, including Bear Mountain's terrain parks, the Burton Stash Park and a 130m (430ft) superpipe with 5m (18ft) walls.
