Where to stay in Rwanda

The growth in Rwanda's tourism industry over the last decade means there is now plenty of accommodation choices for visitors to the country; though Kigali has by far the most diverse offering. The Rwandan capital caters to any budget, offering everything from backpacker hostels (with beds in dormitory-style rooms) to sleek international chains like Marriott and Radisson Blu. The most famous hotel in Kigali (and probably the whole of Rwanda) is Hotel des Mille Collines, which was used as a hiding place for more than 1,200 people during the Rwandan Genocide (an event that forms the basis of the 2004 film Hotel Rwanda). The hotel is still in operation, welcoming guests who enjoy a slice of history with their lodgings.

Popular towns along the shores of Lake Kivu, like Gisenyi on the north shore and Kibuye on the east coast, are tourist spots and they offer a good range of options. Gisenyi also has a campground.

Tourists are also well catered to in popular national parks such as Akagera, Nyungwe and Volcanoes. Visitors can find luxury lodges that mix the latest mod cons with picturesque views over the rural surrounds.

Away from conventional tourist spots, however, accommodation is likely to be limited and basic.
