Wellington International Airport Guide (WLG)
Wellington International Airport is the second busiest airport in New Zealand’s North Island and serves the country’s capital city. Our guide to the airport includes contact details, as well as information on terminal facilities, transportation and nearby hotels.
Wellington International Airport has an information centre in the baggage claim area, which provides customer assistance phones and details of transport, accommodation and other visitor services.
A team of volunteer Airport Ambassadors are also on duty during the afternoon in the busiest areas of the terminal.
From central Wellington, take State Highway 1 southbound and follow the signs for Rongotai/Airport. The drive time from central Wellington is approximately 20 minutes.
Public Transport
Bus: The Airport Flyer express bus (tel: +64 800 801 700; www.metlink.org.nz) runs every 10 minutes from the airport to Wellington train station and back during peak hours during the week; the journey time to central Wellington is approximately 25 minutes and the fare is NZ$8.
Shuttle: A number of shuttle bus companies, including Super Shuttle (tel: +64 4 472 9552; www.supershuttle.co.nz), provide shared-ride services to central Wellington from outside Arrivals. The fare to central Wellington is NZ$20 (or NZ$16 from the city to the airport) for one person, additional passengers are carried for less.
Taxi: Taxis are available immediately outside Arrivals. The main operators are Wellington Combined Taxis (tel: +64 4 384 4444; www.taxis.co.nz), Green Cabs (tel: +64 508 447 336; www.greencabs.co.nz) and Corporate Cabs (tel: +64 4 387 4600; www.corporatecabs.co.nz). Fares to central Wellington are around NZ$35.
Terminal facilities
Wi-Fi internet access is provided free of charge at Wellington International Airport. Postal services are available at Travelex on level 1 of the terminal – stamps can be purchased from the Relay newsagents on the same floor and a courier service is also available. Pay phones and internet/phone kiosks are located throughout the terminal.
There are restaurants, fast food outlets, cafés and a bar in the food court area on level 1. These include a curry-focused restaurant and an eatery serving South East Asian cuisine.
A number of gift shops, duty-free outlets and clothing retailers can be found in the concourses within the terminal building. Additionally, there is a large shopping area on the southwest boundary of the airport site, with 12 superstores.
Luggage storage and lost property services (tel: +64 4 385 5124) are available on the ground level.
Airport facilities
Wellington Airport Conference Centre (tel: +64 4 385 5199) offers a number of meeting rooms with a capacity of up to 100 people. It is situated on level 2 of the main terminal building. There is also a corporate lounge.
Dedicated car parking spaces and car park lifts are available for the disabled. There is also lift access to all levels of the terminal, where there are adapted toilets and staff on hand to offer special assistance. Wheelchairs are available: these should to be arranged with the airline at the time of booking.
Short-term, premium rate and undercover parking is available opposite the terminal. The main long-term car park is linked to the terminal by free shuttle buses. Valet parking (tel: +64 4 801 0639) is also available directly opposite the terminal.
Car hire companies at Wellington International Airport include: Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz and Thrifty. Car hire offices are located on the ground level of the main terminal building (in Arrivals) and the car hire pick-up/drop-off area is at the south side of the terminal.
One of the nearest large hotels to WLG, the Copthorne overlooks the harbour, and has a full range of leisure and business facilities. It is also conveniently located close to the city’s main attractions and central business district, along with the convention centre.
Located a few minutes’ drive from Wellington International, Airport Motel offers basic, motel-style accommodation with car parking facilities and conference space for up to 75 delegates. The motel is linked to the airport by a free shuttle bus service.
Situated less than 2km (1.2 miles) from Wellington International Airport, Brentwood Hotel has an on-site restaurant and provides ‘park and fly’ packages. It also offers conference and meetings facilities.
Connected to the nearby Wellington International Airport by a courtesy shuttle service, Airport Motor Lodge boasts soundproofed rooms and car parking facilities. Day units are also available.
