Christchurch International Airport Guide (CHC)
The largest airport on New Zealand’s South Island, Christchurch International Airport is located a short distance from the city centre. Our guide to the airport includes information on terminal facilities, public transport access and nearby accommodation options.
The i-SITE Visitor Centre (tel: +64 3 353 7774) is located in Arrivals. In addition to providing information and bookings for accommodation, transport and sightseeing tours, staff operate a full travel agency service. Airport help desks are located in both terminals and the contact line is open 24 hours (tel: +64 3 353 7777).
The domestic and international terminals are located within the same building.
From the centre of Christchurch (Cathedral Square), take Colombo Street northbound and then Bealey Avenue and Harper Avenue westbound. Form here, turn right onto Fendalton Avenue and continue to Fendalton Road/Memorial Avenue. Christchurch International Airport is located at the end of Memorial Avenue, off Durey Road. The total drive time to the airport from Christchurch is approximately 18 minutes.
Public Transport
Bus:Metrobus (tel: +64 3 366 8855; www.metroinfo.co.nz) operate bus 29, which connects Christchurch International Airport to the city centre (journey time: 30 minutes). Bus 3 also serves the airport, terminating at Sumner. A single fare costs NZ$8 (or NZ$2.50 when using a Metrocard).
Shuttle:Shuttle buses can be shared and take travellers to their accommodation. SuperShuttle (tel: +64 9 522 5100; www.supershuttle.co.nz) is among the providers. A one-way shared-ride trip to central Christchurch costs NZ$20 and the journey time is around 15 to 20 minutes. Shuttle stops are located directly outside the terminal complex.
Taxi:Taxis are available to the city centre (journey time: 15-20 minutes; fare: NZ$45-$65) from a number of operators, including Corporate Cabs (tel: +64 3 379 5888; www.corporatecabs.co.nz), Blue Star (tel: +64 3 379 9799; www.bluestartaxis.org.nz) and Green Cabs (tel: +64 508 447 336; www.greencabs.co.nz).
Terminal facilities
A number of ATMs and bureaux de change are located throughout the terminal complex. A full-service bank operates on the ground floor of the integrated check-in area.
Free Wi-Fi internet access is available throughout Christchurch International Airport. Additionally, internet kiosks are situated within both terminals. Postal facilities can be found on the first floor of the terminal complex, outside Relay. Public telephones are also readily available.
There is a range of bars, cafés and restaurants at Christchurch International Airport; the majority of which can be found on the first floor.
Shops at Christchurch International Airport include a luggage retailer, newsagents, clothing outlets and souvenir shops. These are located throughout the airport, although the majority can be found on the first floor. Duty-free shopping is situated in International Departures and International Arrivals.
Airport Services (tel: +64 3 353 7749) or help desks should be contacted for lost and found property. Trolleys are available in both terminals.
Other services at Christchurch International Airport include a children’s play area and shower facilities, both located in International Arrivals. There is also an on-site pharmacy and games rooms for departing passengers. Additionally, New Zealand's International Antarctic Centre visitor attraction is a five-minute walk or a free shuttle bus ride from the terminal complex.
Airport facilities
Conference and business facilities are available at the International Antarctic Centre (tel: +64 3 357 0519; www.iceberg.co.nz) and at the Sudima Hotel Christchurch Airport (tel: +64 3 358 3139; www.sudimahotels.com). Airline lounges are situated on the first floor of the terminal complex.
Facilities for disabled travellers include lifts, automatic doors, wheelchair accessible toilets and showers, ATM machines with Braille keys, and dedicated parking spaces in all car parks. Passengers requiring wheelchairs and additional assistance should inform their airline before travelling.
There are open-air short and long-term parking spaces, as well as a multistorey parking facility next to the terminal complex. Spaces can be pre-booked online (parking1.presto.co.nz).
Car hire companies at Christchurch International Airport include: Avis, Budget, Europcar, Ezi, Hertz and Thrifty. Car hire offices are located in Domestic and International Arrivals. Backpackers' camper van hire is also available from several operators. Assistance with car hire is available from the airport’s i-SITE information service (tel: +64 3 353 7774).
The Copthorne Hotel Commodore, which operates a courtesy shuttle service to the airport, is located a few minutes' drive from the terminal complex. The hotel has a swimming pool, fitness centre and extensive business facilities.
A five-minute walk from the terminal building, Sudima Hotel Christchurch Airport boasts a swimming pool, BBQ area and a free 24-hour shuttle service. There are also conference rooms catering for up to 300 delegates.
4km (2.5 miles) from the airport site, to which it is connected via a free shuttle service, the Airport Birches Motel offers a range of self-catering units.
A five-minute drive from the airport, the Airport Lodge offers a free shuttle to and from the airport. Accommodation is in studio and two bedroom apartments and a continental breakfast is included in the room rate. A free luggage storage service is also available.
Located conveniently close to the airport, the Airport Gateway Motor Lodge offers motel style accommodation, as well as meeting facilities, a restaurant, bar and free shuttle service to and from the airport.
