Auckland International Airport Guide (AKL)
The largest airport in New Zealand, Auckland Airport serves the country’s biggest city, Auckland, and acts as a major international transport hub for the wider region. A useful resource for travellers, our Auckland International Airport guide includes details of terminal facilities, public transport access and nearby accommodation options.
The airport is undergoing major expansion work, to be completed by late 2021, including the building of a second runway and a new domestic jet terminal, as well as improvements to public transport services.
There are various help points throughout both terminals. Hospitality ambassadors, also known as ‘bluecoats’, provide passenger assistance from help desks throughout the terminals.
Auckland Tourism iSite information centres (tel: +64 9 365 9925) can be found in the arrival areas in both terminals (International Terminal tel: +64 9 275 6467 - Mon-Sun 24 hours; Domestic Terminal tel: +64 9 256 8480 - Mon-Sun 0700-2100).
A free shuttle bus runs every 15 minutes from 0500-2230 between the terminals. Alternatively, passengers can walk between the terminals, which takes 10 minutes.
To travel to Auckland Airport by car, take Highway 1 (Southern Motorway) southbound from central Auckland towards Manukau City until the Gilles Avenue exit. From here, follow the airport signs southbound onto Highway 20 (Southwestern Motorway) before turning onto Highway 20A which will lead you to the airport. The total drive time to the airport from central Auckland is approximately 30 minutes.
Public Transport
Bus: The SkyBus airport transport service (tel: 0800 SKYBUS or +64 9222 0084; www.skybus.co.nz) connects the airport with the city centre 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The bus departs the airport every 10 minutes during peak times (0700-1900) and the journey time is approximately 60 minutes. Bus connections are also available to Manukau city centre and other regional destinations.
Shuttle: Shared-ride Super Shuttle buses (tel: +64 9 522 5100; www.supershuttle.co.nz) also serve Auckland Airport: these depart from shuttle ranks outside the International and Domestic Terminals. The journey time to the city centre is around 35 minutes.
Taxi: Taxi operators include Auckland Co-op Taxis (tel: +64 9 300 3000; www.cooptaxi.co.nz) and Corporate Cabs (tel: +64 9 377 0773; www.corporatecabs.co.nz). Taxi ranks are situated outside the arrivals area (door 8) of the International Terminal and in front of the Domestic Terminal (door 4). The journey time to central Auckland is about 30 minutes.
Terminal facilities
Wi-Fi internet access is available throughout Auckland Airport (the first 2 hours are free of charge). Coin-, phone card- and credit card-operated telephones can be found throughout the airport. There are various post boxes within the terminals and stamps can be purchased from the on-site newsagents or the duty-free collection point in the International Terminal.
There are numerous restaurants, cafés and bars at the airport, most of which are spread throughout the International Terminal. Options in both terminals range from popular fast-food outlets and juice bars to eateries serving local, global and Asian cuisine.
There are dozens of shops situated throughout Auckland Airport, including duty-free shopping. The majority of the options can be found on the first floor of the International Terminal, with specialist shops selling gifts, watches and confectionery. Duty-free items can be bought online in advance for collection at the airport. The Domestic Terminal has a limited selection of newsagents and clothing accessory retailers.
Left storage facilities are offered by the SmartCarte desks (Departures tel: +64 9 257 3322; Arrivals tel: +64 9 257 3311) in both Arrivals and Departures in the International Terminal. A lost property office (tel: 0800 247 7678) is on-hand to assist with queries regarding luggage misplaced (or discovered) within the terminal. Luggage trolleys are offered free of charge throughout both terminals.
Among the other facilities at Auckland Airport are free showers, first aid assistance, a medical centre, a non-denominational chapel and a Muslim prayer mat areas (1st floor, domestic and international terminals). Nurseries are available for those with children. Passengers with some time to spare can head to the airport observation area on Puhinui Road or play a round of mini golf on a nearby course.
Airport facilities
Four conference/meeting rooms of varying size are available in the Air New Zealand section of the Domestic Terminal (tel: +64 9 256 8924). Additionally, all international airlines provide VIP lounges offering a quiet working environment. Laptop computer connections are available at numerous locations in both terminals.
The nearby Novotel Auckland Airport hotel (tel: +64 9 257 7200; www.novotel.com) has a further seven meeting rooms.
Facilities for disabled passengers at the airport include automatic doors, lifts, accessible toilets and showers, as well as ATMs with Braille keys. There are also disabled parking spaces in front of the terminals and in the airport car parks. Wheelchair assistance is available from the help desks on the ground floor: passengers requiring wheelchairs and special assistance should also inform their airline prior to travel.
Travel to and from the airport can be arranged in advance by Dial-a-ride (tel: +64 9 625 5599), who offer accessible vans for wheelchair users (book in advance).
There are covered and uncovered car parks in front of each terminal (each within three minutes’ walk) providing both short- and long-term options. The low-cost Park & Ride car park is linked to the terminals by a 24-hour shuttle bus service. Valet parking services are available through some airlines. Parking can be pre-booked online via the airport website.
Car hire companies: Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz and Thrifty are represented at Auckland Airport. In the International Terminal, counters are located in Arrivals on the ground floor; for domestic passengers, desks are situated on the ground floor of the multi-level car park immediately opposite Domestic Arrivals.
Hotels
There are numerous hotels within 5km (3 miles) of the airport, from mid-range to luxury – some of these offer complimentary shuttle services to and from the terminals. Hotel reservations can be made at the Auckland Tourism iSite information centre (tel: +64 9 275 6467) in the international terminal, which is open 24 hours, with another counter in the domestic terminal, open daily 0700-2100 (tel: +64 9 246 8480).
Just a 30 to 45-minute drive from central Auckland, Sudima is a luxury hotel less than 2km (1.2 miles) from the terminals. It features a 24-hour shuttle service, an indoor pool, conference and meeting facilities and an international restaurant.
The former Hotel Grande Chancellor is just 3km (2 miles) from Auckland International Airport, with 193 rooms extensively refurbished in 2017. Hotel facilities include a swimming pool, gym, sauna and an Asian-themed restaurant.
Around 4km (2.5 miles) from the airport, the Holiday Inn offers a convenient paid-for shuttle service to and from the terminals. On-site facilities include meeting rooms, an outdoor pool, a business centre and a gym, along with a restaurant and bar.
Boasting conference facilities, on-site dining and a gym, this high-rise modern hotel is situated opposite the International Terminal and offers rooms and suites, as well as a 24-hour restaurant, fitness centre and conference facilities with a capacity of up to 315 delegates.
Housing a swimming pool, restaurant and fitness centre among its facilities, Jet Park Airport Hotel has a range of rooms, suites and apartments. It is a short distance from Auckland International Airport, to which it is linked via a free shuttle service.
This modern 198-room, low-cost option is a five-minute walk from the International Terminal. Wi-Fi access, breakfast and on-site parking are available to guests.
