Yangon International Airport Guide (RGN)
Yangon International Airport is the primary international airport of Myanmar (Burma). Our guide to the airport includes important contact details, local transport information and nearby accommodation options.
Information and assistance desks are available in both terminals, along with tourist information counters which can assist with hotel and transport booking.
From central Yangon, head north past the Hlaing University campus via the Pyay Road, which links directly to the Yangon Airport Road.
Public Transport
Rail:There are two railway stations a short taxi ride from the airport terminals, where local trains (Yangon Circular Railway) link to the city’s central station. The journey time to the city is around 40-50 minutes and fares are minimal (around US$1).
From Yangon Central, trains run to Mandalay (journey time: 12-14 hours; fare: US$30-50) and other cities throughout the country. Further details can be found on the Tourism Myanmar website (www.tourismmyanmar.com).
Taxi:Taxis from the airport are plentiful and relatively cheap, with fixed fares in operation – though these tend to fluctuate depending on whether you are a local or tourist. Depending on traffic, the trip into central Yangon takes about 30 minutes and fares start at around US$6. Payment can be made in either US Dollars or Burmese Kyat, but be sure to use an authorized taxi and confirm the fare with the driver in advance.
Terminal facilities
A number of bureaux de change are available at the airport, primarily concentrated in the Arrivals areas. Numerous ATMs are also available.
Public telephones and fixed internet stations are available in the terminals. Wi-Fi internet access is available in the International Terminal, but this is reportedly not always reliable.
There are self-service cafés in the public areas of the airport, and further dining options are offered in the international Departures VIP lounges.
Several shops selling local souvenirs and handicrafts are available, along with duty-free outlets in both international Arrivals and Departures. There are also jewellery and bookshops.
Porters are available – confirm the fee in advance – and luggage trolleys are free to use, but not allowed outside the terminal building. Left luggage is not available.
Airport facilities
There are no meeting facilities at the airport, but there are five lounges, two in Domestic Departures and three in International Departures.
Conference and meeting rooms are available at the nearby MiCasa Hotel Apartments (tel: +95 1 650 933; www.myanmar.micasahotel.com), a short taxi ride from the airport. The hotel has four dedicated meeting rooms and one large function room.
Special assistance should be arranged with the airline before travel. Otherwise, the airport is more or less on a single level, so it is relatively easy to negotiate in a wheelchair. Note that while the International Terminal is equipped with airbridges, it is necessary to board a bus to reach domestic flights.
It is customary to rent a car with a driver when visiting Myanmar. The various travel agency desks will advise passengers on their options.
Many of the rooms at the Myanmar Life open directly on to the lush gardens that surround the property. Breakfast is included in the room rate, as is a complimentary airport shuttle if required.
With 143 suites of varying size, the MiCasa is a good family option. There is a restaurant and bar, an outdoor pool and a fully equipped fitness centre. Conference and meetings facilities are also available.
Also a short drive from the airport, the High Five is a slightly cheaper alternative to its luxurious neighbours. The hotel’s on-site restaurant serves up a wide range of Southeast Asian cuisine, and Wi-Fi internet access is included in the room rate.
