Miami Hotels
From lavish temples and blinging beds to chic cabanas and simple guesthouses, Miami has hotels to suit every traveller – and every budget. Most of the historic hotels are to be found along South Beach's coastal strip, while Miami Beach is renowned for offering upmarket, international brand hotels. More affordable options can be found Downtown and in suburbs such as Coconut Groves, with options ranging from cheap and chic boutique numbers to Art Deco homes.
The Miami hotels below have been grouped into three different pricing categories:
Luxury (over US$200)
Moderate (US$100 to US$199)
Cheap (under US$100)
The prices quoted above are the starting rates for a standard double room per night, excluding all taxes and breakfast unless otherwise stated.
The former landmark Art Deco Di Lido Hotel, designed by Morris Lapidus in the 1950s, is not your typical Ritz-Carlton. Located in the city's hottest neighbourhood, this South Beach stay looks more like a luxury liner when viewed from the pool deck, with two poolside wings. The 375 spacious guest rooms are decorated in bold nautical colours.
It comes as no surprise that Miami's ultimate urban design hotel is located in South Beach. Stark modernism and the white-on-white décor of the 325 rooms and suites is softened by lush Moroccan-inspired tropical gardens. The hotel’s Mexican restaurant, Diez y Seis, and the renowned Sky Bar are hugely popular with the city’s cool crowd.
As the tallest and most elegant Art Deco hotel on Ocean Drive, The Tides offers genuine style for the incurably hip, with a minimalist interior that is sophisticated, spacious and sumptuous, decorated in soft tones of white, taupe and sand. The 45 suites all have incredible views of the beach.
Housed in one of South Beach’s quaint Art Deco treasures, the Avalon Hotel opened in 1987 and has become a Miami institution. Distinguished by the vintage bright yellow Cadillac parked outside, it has bright, airy rooms, a retro-chic lobby and an upmarket seafood restaurant.
Opened under the auspices of the Diesel Jeans brand, the Pelican Hotel is nothing if not stylish and overlooks the picturesque Lummus Park. Some rooms have sea views, but regardless of whether you get one, all are decorated in a retro-chic style and come with flat-screen TVs and mini-bars.
Once you have seen the Dream South Beach’s beautifully decorated rooms, you will begin to realise what a bargain this is. Housed inside a beautiful Art Deco building, the boutique hotel is small but highly stylish. A swimming pool and lounge occupy the roof.
A bright and cheerful hostel that is a short walk from the Bass Museum of Art, the Freehand Miami is a great choice for those on a budget and who do not mind sharing their sleeping quarters. The brightly coloured rooms sleep up to eight people in bunks and are both mixed and gender-specific if you prefer. The beach is a short walk away.
Occupying one of South Beach’s charming Art Deco buildings, the lavender- and cream-coloured Hotel Shelley is within striking distance of the beach and close to most major amenities. Rooms are cosy and comfortable, and all are decked out in soothing neutral hues. Popular with younger travellers, it does not compromise on style.
Housed in a quaint Art Deco building in South Beach, the Whitelaw Hotel has become a favourite of hipster travellers who do not want to spend the earth on accommodation. Conveniently close to all of Miami Beach’s major attractions, it boasts clean, spacious rooms and a friendly atmosphere.
