Shopping in Latvia

Shopping in Latvia ranges from modern shopping centres and international brands in Riga to traditional markets and craft shops selling local products. Riga is the country's main shopping destination and has a mix of department stores, fashion boutiques, design shops and large shopping malls, while smaller towns often focus more on local crafts and regional specialities.

Traditional Latvian products remain popular with visitors. Common purchases include amber jewellery, woollen clothing, linen products, ceramics, woodcrafts and locally produced cosmetics. Latvian food products such as rye bread, smoked fish, herbal teas, honey and balsam liqueur are also widely sold.

Riga Central Market, located near the city centre, is one of Europe's largest indoor markets and a major shopping attraction in its own right. Housed partly within former Zeppelin hangars, the market sells fresh produce, meats, dairy products, baked goods and regional specialities from across Latvia.

Bargaining is not expected in shops, shopping centres or supermarkets, though it may occasionally be possible in flea markets, craft fairs or when purchasing handmade goods directly from artisans.

Shopping hours

Shops in Latvia generally open Mon to Fri from around 09:00 or 10:00 until 18:00 or 20:00, with shorter opening hours on Saturdays. Large shopping centres and supermarkets in Riga and other major towns often remain open later and may also open on Sundays.

Smaller businesses and shops in rural areas may close earlier, particularly outside the summer tourist season. Markets generally operate during daytime hours, with some opening early in the morning.

Nightlife in Latvia

Nightlife in Latvia is centred largely around Riga, which has one of the livelier nightlife scenes in the Baltic region. The capital offers a wide range of bars, pubs, cocktail lounges, live music venues and nightclubs, particularly within and around the Old Town. Some clubs and late-night venues remain open until the early hours, especially on weekends and during the summer season. Drinking alcohol or carrying open alcoholic containers in streets, parks and many public places in Riga is prohibited and may result in fines. The legal age for purchasing alcohol and entering most nightclubs is 18.

Latvia also has a strong bar and café culture, particularly during the warmer months when outdoor terraces and riverside venues become busy. Craft beer has grown in popularity in recent years, and many bars serve locally produced Latvian beers alongside imported European brands.

Live music, theatre and cultural performances also form an important part of evening entertainment, especially in Riga. Jazz clubs, classical concerts and opera performances are widely available, while summer festivals and open-air events take place across the country.

Outside Riga, nightlife is generally more low-key, though coastal towns such as Jūrmala and cities including Liepāja have active summer scenes with bars, beach venues and seasonal festivals.
