Hyderabad Rajiv Gandhi International Airport Guide (HYD)
Hyderabad Rajiv Gandhi International Airport is situated 25km (19 miles) south of central Hyderabad, in the state of Andhra Pradesh in south-central India.
Named after former Indian Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi, who served for five years before his assassination in 1991, Hyderabad’s main airport is among the busiest airports in India. From the centre of Hyderabad, follow the National Highway NH7 southwards. Hyderabad Rajiv Gandhi International Airport lies just off the main road.
Public Transport
Bus: The Pushpak Airport Liner (tel: +91 1800 200 4599; www.apsrtc.gov.in) is the recommended bus service for visitors to Hyderabad wishing to take a bus rather than a taxi. The fare to the city is Rs. 250 and the journey time is approximately 40 minutes.
Local APSRTC buses (tel: +91 40 3010 2828; www.apsrtconline.in) also operate services from the airport to the city centre (journey time: 40 minutes; fare: Rs. 100).
There are also a number of long-distance bus and coach services connecting the airport with other cities in the surrounding region.
Taxi:Metered taxis, operated by Sky Cabs (tel: +91 40 4949 4949) and Meru (tel: +91 40 4422 4422), are readily available outside the terminal. Journeys from the airport cannot be booked in advance, but trips to the airport can be reserved by phone (fare: Rs. 650).
Terminal facilities
Free Wi-Fi internet access (for up to 45 minutes) is available throughout Hyderabad Rajiv Gandhi International Airport for those with an Indian telephone number. Those without an India phone number can obtain a password from the TATA Teleservices helpdesk (tel: +91 40 6060 7070) in the terminal. Other communication services at the airport include a public call office, which also offers fax facilities, and fixed internet kiosks.
There are restaurants, cafés and international fast-food outlets available in both the domestic and international concourses. A selection of cafés and food stalls can also be found in the Airport Village in the public area.
There is a wide range of shops at Hyderabad Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, including duty-free outlets, which offer locally produced products such as rugs and souvenirs, as well as goods of Western origin and the expected selection of convenience items.
Left-luggage facilities are available in the departure and arrival areas. Porter services (Rs. 100 for the domestic area or Rs. 200 for international) and a lost and found desk (tel: +91 40 6660 6064) are available through the airport's Civil Aviation Office.
Airport facilities
There are 13 business lounges in the airport's domestic and international areas plus an additional three VIP lounges, which offer varying degrees of services. Among them is the Plaza Premium Lounge, which offers business services, refreshments, showers and rest rooms.
More extensive business facilities, including meeting rooms with capacity for between four and 450 people, are available at the nearby Novotel Hyderabad Airport (tel: +91 40 6625 0000; www.accorhotels.com).
Assistance for the disabled, including wheelchair provision, is available on request. Ramps and lift connect all floors of the terminal and adapted services, including toilets, are available for wheelchair users. Any passengers who may require additional assistance are advised to contact the Airport Operator (tel: +91 40 6660 6045) before travelling, as well as their airline.
Short- and long-term parking (tel: +91 40 6660 4210) for around 3,000 vehicles is located outside the terminal building.
Private rental vehicles, with drivers, are available at Hyderabad Rajiv Gandhi International Airport. Operators include Carzonrent and One Car. It is normal in India when hiring a car to have a driver – local road (and traffic) conditions are difficult at best.
Novotel Hyderabad Airport is within the airport site, just a short distance from the terminal, which it is linked to by a shuttle bus service. Among its facilities are various business services, a swimming pool, gym and spa. The hotel’s two restaurants serve regional and international dishes.
If you want to have a quick nap or a shower before you jump on a connecting flight, the Plaza Premium Transit Hotel rents rooms by the hour. Single and double occupancy studios are available and each room comes with air conditioning and power showers.
