Getting around Durban

Public transport

The best bus service is the well-organised Durban People Mover, run by the eThekwini Transport Authority (tel: +27 31 311 1111; www.durban.gov.za), which operates a city loop and a beach line, with an interchange at Dr Pixley KaSeme Street. Day passes are available. Buses run between 0500-2200.

A more extensive network is available through the city's Mynah bus service which covers many of Durban's suburbs. However, these buses aren't as safe and it is recommended that visitors travel around by taxi instead. As in other South African cities, travelling by bus does have its risks, such as pick-pocketing.

For fares, timetables and information on Durban's Muvo smartcard, see www.muvo.co.za.

A network of local trains links the city centre with the outlying suburbs and a number of other towns in the region. These are operated by Metrorail (tel: +27 31 813 0000; www.metrorail.co.za). Again, it is wise to avoid travel after dark.

Within the city, an alternative form of transport is offered by Bangkok-style tuk-tuks, while along the Golden Mile a popular distraction for visitors are the colourful Zulu rickshaws.

Taxis

There are two types of taxi in Durban: metered cabs, which you must book by telephone from a specific location, and the ubiquitous minibus taxis, which you hail on the street. These are often badly maintained, over-full, and sometimes dangerous, so tourists should opt for the former, of which there are a number of reputable operators, including Zippy Cabs (tel: +27 31 202 7067) and Mozzie Cabs (tel: +27 31 303 5787).

Driving

Hiring a car is a one of the easiest ways to get around Durban, especially if you want to explore the surrounding region. Check if your hotel has a secure car park. In the CBD, there is on-street metered parking.

Car hire

Car hire operators in Durban include Avis (tel: +27 31 310 9700; www.avis.co.za), Hertz (tel: +27 31 335 2570; www.hertz.co.za), and Thrifty (tel: +27 31 368 1946; www.thrifty.co.za).

Bicycle hire

If you fancy a beachside cruise on two pedals, you can hire bikes from The Bike and Bean, 290 Snell Parade (tel: +27 82 773 6870; www.bikebeandurban.com).

As in all South African cities, you should take care when walking around, and use taxis or other arranged transport in the evenings.

Visa and passport information is updated regularly and is correct at the time of publishing. You should verify critical travel information independently with the relevant embassy before you travel.
