Restaurants in Detroit
Detroit enjoys the diversity of dining experiences that befits any large American city, with upscale and fast food joints well represented downtown and in the neighbourhoods.
The restaurants below have been divided into different pricing categories:
Expensive: (over US$60)
Moderate: (US$30-US$60)
Cheap: (under US$30)
These prices are for an average three-course meal and for half a bottle of house wine or cheapest equivalent per person; they do not include tax or tip.
Rattlesnake Club
With exquisite art works on the walls, a sophisticated interior and a wonderful view of the Detroit River to boot, the Rattlesnake Club is one of Detroit's foremost dining places. Run by renowned Detroit restaurateur Jimmy Schmidt, the restaurant offers creative, cutting-edge American cuisine of the highest quality, and the attentive staff always make sure that a meal is a pleasant experience.
Townhouse Detroit
Located in the centre of Downtown Detroit, this trendy and extravagant restaurant features two bars, a whiskey library, and an outdoor patio beside its all-glass atrium dining room. Loud and bustling, with industrial décor, this restaurant is guarantee to give you good food, good drinks, and a great time.
Selden Standard
Hip and inventive, this New American restaurant serves up seasonal and locally sourced small plates alongside handcrafted cocktails and a fine selection of wines. Known for their charming servers and rustic atmosphere, you’ll be enchanted by the quality and creativity of Selden Standard’s cuisine.
Elwood Bar & Grill
One of Downtown Detroit's most recognisable eateries, Elwood Bar & Grill is a retro art deco diner serving up American favourites. It was built in 1936 at the corner of Elizabeth Street and Woodward Avenue, but had to move to make way for Comerica Park in 1997. After the move, the diner was given a thorough makeover. Owing to its proximity to Comerican Park and Ford Field, it is popular with sports fans.
Pegasus Taverna
The Pegasus Taverna has been churning out lip-smacking Greek food for over two decades now, and recently added a deli counter to its restaurant. Run by a Greek family, the Taverna is a great way to start a night out in Greektown. Try the famous Saganaki: a plate of kasseri cheese set aflame at your tableside.
Andiamo
Three ingredients go into this Italian restaurant: food, family, and zest for life. The Detroit riverfront branch of this small local chain is perhaps the most enjoyable, with breathtaking water’s edge views. Chef Quirt Edwards does regional Italian classics very well, and locals often remark on its authenticity.
Lafayette Coney Island
In short, a hot dog joint—but possibly the best hot dog joint in the world. This is a relaxed cafe with orange formica tables and matching chairs in true 1970s style. Detroiters stop by for the famous Coney Island Dog, a beef sausage topped with meat chilli, onion and mustard.
Supino Pizzeria
Serving up craft pizzas by the East Market, this Italian eatery breaks down their menu into ‘red’ and ‘white’ pies. The clientele is young and hip, and the thin crusts and fresh ingredients have won this restaurant a loyal following. The Bismarck (made with an egg) is one of the perennial favourites.
Detroit Beer Company
A classic brewhouse not far from Ford Field, this pub is the perfect spot for some American bar food, pre- or post-game. There are some interesting beers on tap, of course, from local Detroit Red to American and Belgian curios. Good quality buffalo wings and nachos accompany the pints.
