Cypriots are generally warm, sociable and hospitable, and personal relationships often play an important role in everyday interactions. Handshakes are the standard greeting in formal situations, while friends and relatives commonly greet each other with kisses on the cheek. Hospitality is valued, and visitors are often offered coffee, sweets or food.

Dress is generally casual in everyday settings, though smart clothing is often worn for evenings out, restaurants and religious occasions. Modest clothing is advisable when visiting churches and monasteries, particularly in rural areas.

Smoking remains relatively common in cafés, bars and outdoor social settings despite restrictions in indoor public places. Social life often revolves around long meals, cafés and evening gatherings, particularly during the warmer months.

Photography may be restricted near military installations, border areas and certain government buildings. Discussions relating to the political division of the island can be sensitive, and visitors are advised to approach such topics respectfully.
