Costa Ricans are generally polite, relaxed and friendly in social interactions. Greetings are important and usually involve a handshake in formal situations, while friends and acquaintances may greet with a kiss on the cheek. Politeness and patience are valued, and overly aggressive or confrontational behaviour is generally frowned upon.

The phrase pura vida is widely used throughout the country and reflects the relaxed and optimistic tone of everyday life. It can mean anything from "hello" and "thank you" to "no problem" or "life is good", depending on the context.

Casual dress is common in most situations due to the warm climate, though smarter clothing is expected in business settings and more formal restaurants. Beachwear should generally be kept to beach and resort areas rather than worn in towns or cities.

Tipping in restaurants is not obligatory because a 10% service charge is included by law, though leaving a small additional amount for excellent service is appreciated. Small tips are also commonly given to hotel staff, tour guides, drivers and luggage porters.

When visiting Indigenous communities, rural villages or religious sites, travellers should behave respectfully and ask permission before photographing people. Environmental awareness is taken seriously in Costa Rica, and visitors are encouraged to respect wildlife, avoid littering and follow local conservation rules in national parks and protected areas.
