Sofia Airport Guide (SOF)
Sofia Airport is located 10km (6 miles) east of Sofia.
Sofia Airport is the main airport serving Bulgaria's capital city, Sofia. It has two terminals - Terminal 1 is used mainly by Wizz Air and charter flights, while Terminal 2 serves a wide range of airlines, including the flag carrier Bulgaria Air. The information desks are located in the public areas of Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. If it is an emergency, please call 112.
A free shuttle service takes travellers between the two terminals, which are about 2km (1 mile) apart. The shuttle runs every 15 minutes from 0500-2300 hours. To get a free inter-terminal shuttle service, follow the signs to the front of the terminal. If you need an inter-terminal transfer outside the operating hours, please call +359 2 937 2211. Taxis are another option.
Starting from Ploshtad Orlov Most (Eagles' Bridge), drive southeast on Tsarigradsko Shose Boulevard then turn right onto the slip road to Sofia Airport.
Public Transport
Metro Line 1 (https://www.metrosofia.com/en/) connects Terminal 2 with the city centre (aim for Serdika Metro Station). The journey is about 28 minutes. From Serdika, you can take Metro Line 2 to Central Bus Station or Central Railway Station (these two are just 3 minutes' walk apart), and from there you can go to all corners in Bulgaria.
The Metro operation hours are from 0530-midnight.
Bus: Sofia Public Transport Company (SKGT) (tel: +359 700 13233; www.sofiatraffic.bg) operates number 84 and number 184, both connect Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 with the city centre (General Yosif V Gourko street). They also operate number 384 which goes to Druzhba. You can buy your tickets from the vending machine in Terminal 1, the Urban Mobility Center kiosks in the public areas of Terminal 2, or directly from the driver. Do note that you are allowed to carry up to two pieces of hand luggage with you on public buses and you may need to pay extra if you carry multiple pieces of luggage.
Shuttle: Several of the bigger hotels provide shuttle buses to or from the airport.
Taxi: To avoid scammers, Sofia Airport recommends you to request for a taxi at the offices of OK Supertrans in the arrival halls of Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, before proceeding to the taxi ranks outside. This company (Ok Supertrans) operates honest and reliable taxi services. A journey from the airport to the city centre should cost about 15 lev. You can also pre-book by visiting oktaxi.net or call +359 2 973 2121. Uber does not operate in Bulgaria.
Terminal facilities
There are cafés serving a range of drinks, light meals and snacks both before and after the security area in Terminal 1. Terminal 2 has greater options, including a restaurant offering a variety of international dishes, sandwiches, salads, soft drinks, beer and wine in the departures area.
There are several shops at Sofia Airport, including a duty-free shop (for travellers leaving the EU) in Terminal 2 selling alcohol, tobacco, toiletries, cosmetics, accessories and much more. Additionally, there is a shop selling Bulgarian wines and other alcoholic beverages, as well as a number of souvenir and gift shops.
Lost and found offices are located in both terminals (tel: +359 2 937 2211). Luggage wrapping facilities are available in the departures area.
Airport facilities
Terminal 1: Lounge Sofia has desks for working executives.
Terminal 2: Lounge Preslav has a business centre with computer, photocopier, printer and fax services.
Terminal 2: Lounge Pliska has desks for businesspeople.
Terminal 1 has sloped entry to the car park for wheelchair users and there are designated parking spaces reserved for disabled passengers. There are also specialised toilets and a lift to the business class lounge in the terminal.
Terminal 2 was designed with special attention to disabled passengers. Access between the various levels of the multi-storey car park is facilitated by lifts and escalators, and there are adapted toilets for wheelchair users.
Sofia Airport also has facilities to aid the boarding or disembarkation of disabled travellers: these should be requested in advance (tel: +359 2 937 2175 from 0830-1700 hours).
Terminal 1 has two car parks, one underground and one uncovered (this one has 400 spaces).
Terminal 2 has a multi-storey car park with 800 spaces.
They all have the same tariffs.
Car hire companies at Sofia Airport include Avis, Budget, Choice, Europcar, Sixt and Thrifty, plus local operators. Desks for these operators are located in both terminals.
The 62-room Triada offers two conference rooms and a business centre as well as a restaurant and bar. Airport transfers are available, as is free internet access and a fully-equipped fitness centre.
A 3-star hotel, the small Hotel Consul is about 10 minutes by taxi from the airport. It offers a restaurant, business centre and free internet access, and is close to a bus stop.
