Bordeaux wine is rightly feted the world over, so it would be a crime to not get a look at where it all comes from. You can book tours through the tourist office (www.bordeaux-tourisme.com/), which will usually consist of two wine chateau visits.
Things to do in Bordeaux
Take a day trip to St Emilion
Set 35km (22 miles) from Bordeaux is the village of Saint Emilion, which, like Bordeaux, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The village itself dates back to prehistoric times and though the architecture is newer than that, after a few hours you'll reminiscing about the old (old) days. Don’t forget to walk up to Monolithic Church for some stunning views.
Climb up a big heap of sand
If all the cheese eating and wine quaffing has got to you, head to the nearby coast for some invigorating sea air. If you head to Archachon Bay you’ll find the Dune de Pilat, proud owner of the title of biggest sand dune in Europe, at 110m. Just don’t blame us when you get sand in your shoe.
Catch a classical concert at the Grand Theatre de Bordeaux
This wonderful neoclassical building dates back to 1780 and is worth visiting for its facade alone, which has 12 Corinthian style columns, each topped with a statue representing the nine art muses, or the Roman goddesses of Juno, Venus and Minerva. Of course, it’s worth catching an opera or ballet there (tel: +33 (0)5 56 00 85 95; www.opera-bordeaux.com) though you won’t find much in English.
Shuck some oysters at market
All great things happen next to water, and it’s no different here. On Sunday mornings from 0700 to 1300, the producer’s market Marché des Quais kicks off down the quay. With the amazing collection of cheese, boulangerie and charcuterie available, you won’t go wanting for delicious things to eat. Make like a local and go for oysters and white wine. The tourist office (www.bordeaux-tourisme.com) will assist with any further information you may need.
