Grantley Adams International Airport Guide (BGI)
Grantley Adams International Airport is situated 13km (8 miles) southeast of Bridgetown.
The only major airport in Barbados, Grantley Adams International Airport is a short distance from the island’s capital, Bridgetown. The airport has recently undergone significant expansion, including the addition of a new Arrivals section and improved duty-free and restaurant areas.
There are information desks in Arrivals and Departures. A Barbados Tourism Authority counter is also available within the terminal.
Grantley Adams International Airport can be accessed from the Tom Adams Highway, which runs from Bridgetown to the airport (journey time: approximately 30 minutes). It can also be reached from Highway 7, along the southern coast.
Public Transport
Bus:Buses run between Bridgetown and the airport every 10 minutes from 0600 to 2400, departing from the main road outside the terminal building (journey time: 45 minutes; fare: BD$2).
Taxi:Taxis operate from the airport 24 hours a day, with a number of authorised companies present, including Quintette (tel: +1 246 428 8735). Taxis operate on a fixed-fare basis and do not have meters; fares should be agreed in advance. The average fare between Bridgetown and the airport is approximately BD$45-50.
Terminal facilities
A bank and several bureaux de change points are available at the airport. ATMs can be found in the departures area, both before and after security.
Public telephones and free Wi-Fi internet hotspots are located throughout the terminal. Charging points for electronic devices are also available. There is a post office in the departures area, before security.
A bar and a number of restaurants serve local dishes and international cuisine, from an Asian outlet to a Caribbean grill eatery.
Among the shops at Grantley Adams International Airport are souvenir and gift shops, jewellers, and a convenience store. Duty-free can be found in the departures lounge – there is also an inbound duty-free shop in the arrivals lounge for international flights.
The airport houses a Lost and Found desk (tel: +1 246 420 2900), on hand to assist passenger with lost luggage queries.
Airport facilities
The Club Caribbean Lounge in the departures area has a business centre with fax and internet facilities, and meeting rooms. Airline executive lounges are located on the mezzanine level.
Off-site, the Casa Grande Hotel (tel: +1 246 416 3351; www.casagrandebarbados.com) has extensive meeting and event facilities, and is less than 10 minutes from Grantley Adams International Airport by taxi. Elsewhere, the island offers two large convention centres, as well as hotel meeting rooms.
The arrivals and departures halls are located on the ground floor of the airport and are easily accessible to disabled passengers. There is a lift to the restaurant on the mezzanine level and disabled toilets are located throughout the airport. Wheelchairs can be provided by individual airlines, which can also assist passengers onto the aircraft by ambulift: passengers requiring wheelchairs and special assistance should inform their airline prior to travel.
There are two car parks at Grantley Adams International Airport; both are within walking distance of the terminal. There is no separation between short- and long-term parking areas.
Courtesy Car Rentals, Stoute’s Car Rental and Drive-A-Matic are represented at the airport; desks for these operators are located just outside the arrivals hall. Other car hire companies are located off site and can deliver pre-booked vehicles to the airport.
Situated a short distance to the west of the airport, the Butterfly Beach hotel is another waterfront option, with a choice of rooms and apartments offering the choice of self-catering or fully-serviced stays.
One of the nearest hotels to the airport, the Casa Grand offers free airport and beach shuttle services, as well as a swimming pool, entertainment options and a choice of bars and eateries. Meeting facilities are available for up to 2,000 delegates.
A little further away from the airport, this small beachfront hotel offers 15 apartments and studios, a beach bar and restaurant, and is set within lush gardens. Activities available include surfing and game fishing.
