Macedonian Denar (MKD; symbol ден) = 100 deni. Notes are in denominations of ден2000, 1000, 500, 200, 100, and 50. Coins are in denominations of ден10, 5, 2, and 1, and 50 deni.
Major credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard) are accepted in most hotels, restaurants, and shops, but cash is preferred in smaller towns and markets.
There are no limits on the amount of foreign currency travellers can import or export, but amounts over €10,000 (or equivalent) must be declared to customs.
North Macedonia (FYR Macedonia) duty free
The following goods may be imported into North Macedonia (FYR Macedonia) by travellers over 18 years old without incurring customs duty:
• 200 cigarettes or 100 cigarillos or 50 cigars or 250g of tobacco.
• 1L of spirits over 22% volume or 2L of alcoholic drinks under 22% volume.
• 2L of wine.
• 50ml of perfume and 250ml of eau de toilette.
• Other goods to the value of €350.
