Macedonian Denar (MKD; symbol ден) = 100 deni. Notes are in denominations of ден2000, 1000, 500, 200, 100, 50 and 10. Coins are in denominations of ден50, 10, 5, 2 and 1.
Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in North Macedonia, particularly in hotels, restaurants, supermarkets and larger shops in cities and tourist areas. Visa and Mastercard are the most commonly accepted cards, while American Express is less widely used.
Mobile payment methods are becoming more common, especially in Skopje and other larger cities, though cash is still widely used for smaller purchases, markets and in rural areas.
Travellers should carry some cash when visiting smaller towns, rural regions or traditional markets, where card facilities may be limited.
ATMs are widely available in cities, towns and tourist areas throughout North Macedonia. They can commonly be found at banks, shopping centres, airports and along main streets. Most ATMs accept international debit and credit cards, including Visa, Mastercard, Maestro and Cirrus. Cash is dispensed in Macedonian denars.
ATMs may be less common in remote rural areas and smaller villages, so travellers should carry sufficient cash when travelling outside major towns and cities. As with anywhere, travellers should exercise normal caution when withdrawing cash and avoid using isolated machines late at night.
There are no restrictions on the import of foreign currency into North Macedonia, although amounts equivalent to €10,000 or more must be declared to customs authorities.
The export of foreign currency exceeding €10,000 must also be declared, and the export of more than 120,000 Macedonian denars is prohibited for both residents and non-residents.
Travellers are advised to retain currency exchange receipts, particularly when converting large amounts of foreign currency.
Foreign currency can be exchanged at banks, exchange offices and some hotels in North Macedonia. Exchange offices are common in cities and tourist areas and often offer more competitive rates than hotels. Euros are the easiest foreign currency to exchange, although US dollars and several other major currencies are also accepted at many exchange offices and banks.
North Macedonia (FYR Macedonia) duty free
The following goods may be imported into North Macedonia (FYR Macedonia) by travellers over 18 years old without incurring customs duty:
• 200 cigarettes or 100 cigarillos or 50 cigars or 250g of tobacco.
• 1L of spirits over 22% volume or 2L of alcoholic drinks under 22% volume.
• 2L of wine.
• 50ml of perfume and 250ml of eau de toilette.
• Other goods to the value of €350.
