North Macedonians are generally warm, polite and hospitable, and visitors are usually welcomed with friendliness and curiosity. Greetings often involve a handshake, particularly in formal situations, while close friends may greet each other with kisses on the cheek.

It is customary to greet shopkeepers, hotel staff and others when entering smaller businesses or public places. Punctuality is appreciated, although social gatherings may begin later than scheduled.

Casual dress is widely accepted in most situations, though more conservative clothing may be appropriate when visiting religious sites such as churches and mosques. Visitors should dress respectfully and speak quietly inside places of worship.

Photography is generally acceptable in public areas, but permission should be sought before photographing individuals, particularly in rural communities or inside religious buildings.
