With two four-day bank holiday weekends in a row this April and May, there is no excuse for staying at home. We've put together five holiday ideas, from long weekends in Europe to 11-day breaks in Japan.
Long weekend in the UK: Edinburgh

Housing a wealth of attractions and located just a short drive from stunning springtime vistas and walking trails, Edinburgh is the perfect long-weekend destination. Easter Monday is not a bank holiday in Scotland, so there is plenty of opportunities to explore the full range of shops and activities. During the second bank holiday in April, there's also a chance to experience some traditional Celtic culture at the Beltane Fire Festival.

The Italians celebrate religious festivals like no one else, and Easter is no exception. Florence's Scoppio del Carro (Explosion of the Cart), involving the procession of a firework-laden, ox-drawn cart that is later set alight by a dove-shaped rocket, is a remarkable sight. The Tuscan city, with its compact city centre, balmy climate and abundance of cultural attractions, makes for the perfect short escape this spring.
7 days away: Philadelphia

Besides its iconic historical sights, including Independence Hall, where the US Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776, Philadelphia also boasts a vibrant arts and cultural scene, from African-American festivals to avant-garde theatres and world-class museums. Low prices, warm temperatures and a host of outdoor events make spring the best time to visit. Join the locals as they parade in their Easter bonnets down the city's hip South Street during Easter weekend, or check out the cultural talent throughout the city during the Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts (7 April - 1 May).
11 days short haul: Crete, Greece

Springtime in Crete means warm, sunny days and wild flowers galore. Easter is also the most important holiday in Greece and is a fantastic time to experience the colourful customs and religious ceremonies of this hospitable country. Head inland to the more traditional mountain villages for pretty flower-covered churches, Easter biscuits and candle-lit processions. Get active and explore the rugged interior's dramatic gorges and hiking trails, or soak up the first rays of the year on one of the stunning beaches in an isolated cove.
11 days long haul: Japan

April is considered the best time of year to visit Japan as the weather is pleasantly mild and the cherry blossoms are in bloom across the country. Tokyo has an abundance of places to marvel at the beautiful blossoms, including the peaceful gardens of Shinjuku Gyoen, whilst Ueno Park hosts more rowdy festivities. For an iconic sight to remember, take a trip to the northern shores of Lake Kawaguchiko, where majestic Mount Fuji is framed by a sea of pink.
