As Bonfire Night approaches, World Travel Guide has pulled together a list of global celebrations guaranteed to illuminate the night sky.

Macau, China

Witness a breathtaking celebration of Macau’s cultural heritage during the International Firework Festival. As fireworks are one of the region’s oldest traditions, this fireworks celebration is arguably the most elegant and sophisticated in the world. Held in late September, the festival coincides with China’s Mid-Autumn Festival, an important event for locals and tourists alike.

Montreal, Canada

The Montreal Fireworks Festival turns up the heat each summer with a battle of flames. The competition takes place over Dolphin’s Lake at La Ronde amusement park, where families can enjoy rides by day and fireworks by night. The Grand Finale, held in August, is a 30 minute long pyromusical show, in which eight countries compete for the Jupiter prize.

Sydney, Australia

Travel to the opposite side of the earth for a spectacular New Year’s fireworks display held over Sydney Harbour. Spectators can purchase tickets on board one of the 50 illuminated vessels of the Harbour of Light Parade. The dazzling fleet sets sail around the harbour after the first display at 2100 and before the extraordinary midnight finale.

Louisville, USA

North America’s largest fireworks display kicks off the Kentucky Derby with a bang. After a full day of festivities, nightfall brings “Thunder Over Louisville,” a dazzling 28 minute fireworks show over the Clark Memorial Bridge. One of the signature stunts is the “waterfall,” creating the illusion of flames raining over a 1.6km (1 mile) swathe of sky.

Edinburgh, Scotland

In early September each year, more than four tonnes of fireworks ignite over scenic Edinburgh Castle. Exploding to the rhythm of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, spectators can tune into to the radio and gaze skyward to enjoy the multi-coloured spectacle. This fiery display is the largest in Europe, and can be seen from any vantage point in Edinburgh.
