Table Bay Hotel's Jocelyn Myers reveals her favourite Cape Town eateries

Wondering what there is to eat in Cape Town beyond braai (barbecue) and biltong? Table Bay Hotel’s executive chef Jocelyn Myers spills the beans on the best restaurants in South Africa’s most popular city.

BEST FOR LUNCH WITH THE GIRLS
THE FOOD BARN
In Noordhoek there’s a guy called Frank Dangereux, who started a place called The Food Barn. It’s got a little café, which is cool for during the day - it has great pies, great sandwiches. But then also there’s a spot where you can go for lunches. It’s the kind of place, if I’m meeting a friend and I don’t have the baby with me, I’ll go there. It’s more like a ladies-who-lunch type thing - you can sit, have some really nice wines. South African wines are much better than I thought! I won’t call it fine dining but it’s a bit more finessed. It’s just the other side over Chapman’s Peak, a beautiful pass. Anyone who comes to Cape Town should drive over Chapman’s Peak anyway so you might as well go to a really nice restaurant while you’re out there.

BEST FOR FINE DINING
ROUNDHOUSE
I love Roundhouse for fine dining, which is in the Glen in Camp’s Bay. The Glen is part of SANParks, which is a reserve. They’ve got the Rumbullion, these outdoor terraces, which do picnics in the summer time – that bit’s casual. But the fine dining restaurant is like really over the top fine dining, tiny little portions, really really cool, silver service. They have a company that does service training all over the world so they get the cream of the crop of people serving. It’s a really wonderful food experience, and they source all local products, which I think is great.

BEST MARKET
HOUT BAY MARKET
Everyone knows the Biscuit Mill but there’s another great market in Hout Bay, which runs on Saturday and Sunday. It’s called Hout Bay market. I prefer to go to the Hout Bay one now because I find Biscuit Mill too crazy, it’s gone viral, there are so many people. Hout Bay isn’t nearly as hectic. The produce is fresh, and the food stalls are good but it’s also got this cool vibe with musicians playing and there are arts and crafts stalls too, not just food.

BEST FOR CHEAP EATS
SOUTH CHINA DIM SUM
There’s a great dim sum restaurant on Long Street which is very reasonable but it’s very small. Very simple, very basic in the look of it, with wooden tables and crates for chairs. You have to get there early because it gets very busy; just two guys work there and that’s it, but the dim sum is fresh made, good quality – the menu changes every day – and the food is really great. And if you’re coming from abroad, it’s really cheap.

BEST FOR MEAT LOVERS
MZOLI’S
Mzoli’s is in Khayelitsha, it’s in a township. I don’t know if it’s open every day, but it’s like a big braai place. You just plop down and they just grill meats, grill meats, grill meats, everyone sits at these big tables and people bring beers. Anyone can go. It’s quite popular. You know it’s a place to go show off, if you have got a new car, or you got this or that. Tourists will go there, but you get into the township and you see how people are chilling and maxing and relaxing and that whole vibe.  It’s just a fun place to eat lots of meat and drink lots of beer in a festive vibe.
