Chinese society places importance on politeness, respect and social harmony. Greetings are usually formal, with a handshake or slight nod being common in both social and business settings.

Dress is generally casual in everyday situations, though smart-casual attire is expected in restaurants and business environments. When visiting temples or religious sites, modest dress is advisable.

Photography is generally permitted in public places and tourist attractions, though restrictions may apply in temples, museums and government or military areas. It is courteous to ask permission before photographing individuals, particularly in rural areas.

Tipping is not traditionally expected in China and is generally not practised. In some high-end hotels or establishments catering to international visitors, a service charge may be included.
