Credit cards are widely accepted in Yerevan, particularly in hotels, larger restaurants, shopping centres and supermarkets. Visa and Mastercard are the most commonly accepted cards. Outside the capital and in smaller towns, cash remains more prevalent, and smaller establishments may not accept cards. Digital payments and contactless transactions are increasingly common in urban areas, though Armenia is still largely a cash-based society in rural regions.
ATMs are widely available in Yerevan and other major cities, and machines generally accept international bank cards. English-language instructions are typically available. In smaller towns and remote areas, ATM availability may be limited, so carrying sufficient cash when travelling outside major urban centres is advisable.
Travellers entering Armenia with cash exceeding US$10,000 (or the equivalent in other currencies) must declare it to customs authorities upon arrival. The export of Armenian dram is restricted, and visitors should retain official exchange receipts if they intend to reconvert local currency before departure.
Foreign currency, particularly US dollars and euros, can be exchanged at banks and licensed exchange offices throughout the country. Exchange offices are common in central Yerevan and often offer competitive rates. It is advisable to use official exchange points rather than informal channels.
